The best way I've heard it put is that Bama is an obstacle, or a nemesis even, but not a rival.

There's not a good word for what Georgia and Alabama is right now.

You'll hear announcers say "boy, Georgia and Alabama has developed into quite a rivalry," kind of like "the Patriots and Giants have developed into quite a rivalry" before they played against each other for the second time, even though they weren't traditional rivals.

Maybe there's a difference between "rivals" and "a rivalry." shite, I don't know.

1. Georgia Tech
2. Florida
3. Auburn

All three are, and should be, equally hated. Tech should be hated half a step more than the rest.

Other 'rivals' include:

Tennessee
Clemson

The rest are just opponents, imo.

College age folks or folks under the age of 35 would think of Bama/UGA as a big rival. Older folks remember when Tech/Aub/Fla were stronger & more competitive. The younger crowd looks primarily at the last 10-15-20 yrs.

Exactly. There's been a bunch of high profile matchups lately, but for the lifetime series that's pretty uncommon.

Hell, from 1995 through 2015 Georgia and Alabama only played each other about 5 times. We went 7 years without playing in the late 90's and early 2000's and did two other stretches without playing for 4 years at time.

Can't really be a rival if you're only matching up twice a decade.

not even remotely close. Asking a bunch of 19 year olds that have been drinking all day probably isn't the best way to go about this either. Also one of my biggest pet peeves on earth:

quote:

Who is Georgia's REAL rival? We asked Georgia fans to rank...

These are two different things. You can ask John Q. Dawgfan who HE hates the most, or who HE thinks is the biggest rival, but that's irrelevant to who actually IS our biggest. I can shout til I'm blue in the face that the sky is green but that doesn't make it actually so. Our biggest rival is tech, followed by UF/AU in some kind of 2A / 2B situation, take your pick. That is indisputable and not up for debate. It just IS, man.

College football is more about tradition than any other sports entity. That's why discussing rivals and rivalries is tricky and you have to watch your words around other people.

Georgia and Alabama first started going at it 9 years ago. I think about that and then think about how Georgia and Tennessee first started playing each other in the SEC East every year in 1992, and by 2001 I definitely considered Tennessee to be a rival.

An even better example would be Florida and Tennessee in the 1990s. It was really intense. What would you call Florida and Tennessee by 2001 if it wasn't a rivalry?

I don't know a single one who does and have never heard more than a handful of UGA fans who would make that claim. Until recently UGA, Tennessee and Alabama avoided one another like the plague...UT and Alabama played regularly but they both avoided UGA and UGA avoided both of them....for many many years. UGA has played Alabama 77 times in 134 years, 6 of those have been in the "post season" in the last 14? years. UGA and UT have only played 56 times and had played every year since 1992 until this season so 33 of those 56 times happened over the last 33 years, the previous 101 years UGA and UT had only met 23 times. Most UGA fans would name Florida or Georgia Tech as our biggest rivals with Auburn being a VERY close second or third. Alabama is probably seen as a big rival for anyone under 35 or so.

And if Clemson were in the SEC, you would remove Tennessee from this list.

Certainly. Almost as much friendly animosity between fans of Clem's Son and UGA as there is between UGA and the Gnats from The North Avenue Trade School.

I think UGA and GT is the most contentious rivalry UGA has due to it being in state....I get more "stink eye" from tech fans than any fanbase other than Florida. The difference is historically GT is slightly less likely to beat UGA than Florida...only slightly....so that makes Florida, for me, more "hated". I almost never get any "stink eye" from Auburn fans, this week notwithstanding LOL.....Auburn and UGA is about as calm a rivalry as you will find...it can be contentious but I think generally the fanbases interact pretty well with one another...more so than UGA and UF or UGA and GT. None of them are as contentious as Alabama / Auburn.

The fact that you are starting threads about Georgia tells me that:

1. You are still butt hurt over your loss 12 days ago
2. You consider Georgia, Alabama's rival
3. You seem to think about Georgia an inordinate amount of time while, supposedly Auburn and Tennessee are supposedly your biggest rivals.

Dude. It's been 12 days. Time to move on.

It's a good thing the regular season doesn't matter anymore.
