Is Heupels offense sustainable?

You obviously need a good quarterback but that kind of goes for every offense. I think with the super wide sets and tempo, defenses have no choice but to put people in 1 on 1 situations and if we have the athletes I think it can continue. Seems more sustaonable than gus's to me as a very biased observer. What do you frickers think?

Heupel’s offense is like a great set of fake tits. Kirby’s Defense is marriage material. It makes sense if you think about it.

I think it definitely relies on a QB with a wide array of traits
- good decision maker
- a threat with his legs (not necessarily a track star, but someone the defense has to account for)
- accurate deep arm
You can find 1-2 speed WRs and 1-2 big bodied possession guys at a place like Tennessee every recruiting cycle, so I wouldn't think that would be a big deal.
My guess would be that the offense is always pretty good, but that it's efficiency is heavily rooted in the QB. And, it is an offense that if it isn't efficient can really put pressure on your own defense.

If you’re asking if he’s gonna quickly get figured out like what happened to Gus, my guess is no
He does some great pre-snap shifts that remind me of our two years with Sark. Makes it real easy to determine if the D is running zone or man. Like the Sark years, he’s scheming guys wide TF open on deep balls. That was evident even in the 2 games with Milton
I don’t think you absolutely need a 32 year old QB to run it but I’m sure it helps

Milton can throw the teetotalfrickingshit out of a football. In fact its literally the only thing he does. Screen passes and hail marys have the same velocity

He's running a similar offense as Riley or Gundy who have both been consistent Top 10 teams. All three coaches are former Leach guys that have modified the air raid with more QB and RB run than Leach.

Huepels O needs reliable WRs, an intelligent QB, and good RBs. He can adapt to the strength or away from the weakness in everything else but needs those 3 things.
Hooker is an intelligent QB that is a decent runner and has a decent arm.
Tillman, McCoy, Hyatt are reliable WRs with a great mix of size, speed, and decent rout running. Tillman is a true #1, McCoy and Hyatt are very good support WRs.
Small and Wright are serviceable RBs. They are the limiting factor on the O right now. If Evans of Gibbs had transferred to Tennessee or Gray or the other Evans stay this O would be an absolutely unstoppable.
Next year the O will adapt to Milton as a more polished drop back passer with Hyatt or McCoy as the #1 WR with smaller faster WR options in the #2 role. Hopefully Wright develops and the 2 freshman learn protections AND the Bols get a dominant back from the portal to supplement a more traditional running game (significantly less QB runs).
In 2024 McCoy will be a SR, and the QB will be more of a dual threat and hopefully the running game will be the dominant aspect of the O.

Im cautiously optimistic about what Milton looks like next year with two full years in this system. Obviously he’s not going to be as good as Hooker but man, Milton has so much potential with his size, athleticism and perhaps the strongest arm in the country. His touch looks much improved from what I’ve seen this year so obviously the big hurdle is between his ears and being completely in sync with Heupel imo.
The ideal scenario is Milton becomes an awesome bridge for one season between Hooker and young Nico Iamaleava. Obviously a big if but if above happens and we hit on Nico, VOLS could be looking at a ridiculous run of elite quarterback play with this offense

Yes. It's not really doing anything that different. The use of tempo has been in the public spotlight for a good 15 years now (I'm using Chip Kelly at Oregon to date when it became something people thought about it but tbh, it's been around for for eons, even before teams ran it more regularly people were using tempo in games).
