Thomas was the GOAT OLB and maybe as good or better a pass rusher in college and the pros than anyone. He could play today and be dominant. Cornelius Bennett from back then was pretty decent too.
Thomas was a GREAT player that should have learned how to buckle up, he'd still be alive today if he did.
But
Withtout a doubt, Lawrence Taylor would be any knowledgeable football person's choice as to who is the GOAT all time OLB, not even a question

Thought he was a lb playing lb
Ogletree was a linebacker.
He played safety as a true freshman to get him on the field (too talented to keep off). He was a linebacker the next 2 seasons.

Easily Alabama if you're comparing only these two.
Who remembers any of these guys in the UGA list?
ETA: Didn't know Mark Barron was a LB. Damn. Unless he was sooo fast he was linebacking and playing safety at the same time.

No need for that one.

All those Bama linebackers are busts

It is fact, he was ejected from a rollover vehicle crash because he was not wearing his seat belt on icy roads and broke his neck, which ultimately lead to his death.
I am not being malicious, I wish he had been wearing it, he was a phenomenal FB player that I enjoyed watching that still had some career left in FB, and the rest of his life afterword

Fair enough.

If we want to just talk simple numbers here, LSU has 2 Thorpe award winners,a recent finalist, and many people who didn't win it, that are still playing well in the NFL, such as Tyrann Mathieu, Jamal Adams, etc. Iowa has 1 Thorpe award winner, with one other finalist recently. 2 is more than 1. It's simple math.

Where did this thread get turned into a db/thorpe award thread?

That's what you say when you can no longer defend your position because you realize the facts don't back you up.
The fact that you think Iowa is DBU just shows you're a huge troll or you're dumb as frick. You can pick which one it is.

Alabama, and it's not even close I think.
DeMeco Ryans, Dont'a Hightower, CJ Mosely, and Mark Barron have all been pro bowl selections in recent years in addition to the healthy #'s on rosters (Reggie Ragland, Courtney Upshaw,Rolando McClain, Tim Williams, Ryan Anderson). Reuben Foster is playing at a pro bowl level. We had two HOF and all decade players in Cornelius Bennett and Derrick Thomas in the 1990's and early 2000's.

better in the NFL than college
Why do people - college football fans - get si hung up in this bullshite?
There will be no retroactive championships.
Is everyone turning into an 7SU fan?

quote:I mentioned the possibility of him switching earlier in his career, like Deone Buchanon, Alex Ogletree, Ray-Ray Armstrong, etc, and got trashed for it. He fits much better at linebacker. He’s a bigger guy and has never been afraid of contact, but he always struggled in coverage and was more of an “in the box” kind of player to start with.
