Or did he just luck out and get two of the best all-time college QBs back to back?
The one year he didn’t have an absolutely freaky QB, his season was somewhat pedestrian, and got crushed in the playoffs by a Hurts-led Alabama team.

I’m not saying he’s a bad coach at all, but if he doesn’t have the best QB in cfb, does he ever win a championship?

By comparison, Saban has NEVER had the best QB in the country, and won 6 titles

I love this line of thinking. "If team A didn't have their best player, would they ever win the championship?!"

Come on man

Plenty of average coaches have lucked into one national title. But all doubt was removed when he did it again. He’s elite. No arguing against that now.

And those QBs have certainly helped. But there are elite players at every level on both sides of the ball.

Getting the best players you can and developing them is a big part of what makes a HC good. Dabo is doing that as good as anyone right now so, yeah, he is really good.

I did not see Dabo having this kind of success when he became HC at Clemson. It's damn impressive.

The one nice thing I'll say about Dabo is that he's done a good job convincing everyone that Clemson's program is "different" because he's such a great guy when in reality he's as big of a scum bag as everyone else.

The QB is the most important position by far.
My point is that Saban has never had the best QB in the country, yet still won 6 titles.

Dabo has only won whilst having the best QB in the country. The same goes for Jimbo Fisher, Gene Chizik. Etc

Yeh Dabo is that good. When Saban retires Bama will be begging Dabo to come back to Alabama. That is as close to 100% certainty as it gets.

Yes, he is in charge of the complete program, which involved recruiting to get those great players to coach. Saban wouldn't win without those great players he gets either. It's part of the job.

Sounds like your question isn’t whether Dabo is good but rather is he better than Saban.

I think Trevor Lawrence is over-rated, so I don't think this statement about "two of the best all-time college QB's" is true.

Watson however was fricking nuts and 100% got screwed out of the Heisman.

We didn't lose the last game because of QB play, we lost because we got out coached. And I believe that in itself answers your question.

Maybe you should be asking yourself why the best QB in the country never wants to play for Saban

Yeah, again my point is that he doesn’t necessarily have the best players. He just happens to have the best QB.
Getting the best QB in the country is great scouting for sure, but it’s not something you can count on every year. He’s just gotten really lucky to get Deshaun and Trevor back to back. Plenty of mediocre coaches have won championships with a freak at QB (Gene Chizik)

Dabo is the real deal. He knows how to recruit, he lets his Asst's do their job, he knows how to develop the talent he brings in and he knows how to tailor his schemes to the talent they have on the roster.

There are dozens of HC's that can't get all those pieces together. They are too damn stubborn to evolve with the times. Their programs end up in consistent mediocrity and the fans become disgruntled and apathetic in the process. We see this right here in our own division in the SECWest.

He’s 6’6”, mobile, he started for his HS at age 14, he broke all of Deshaun Watson’s HS records in Georgia, and just ripped Alabama’s defense apart in a NC game as a true freshman, as well as going undefeated.

Trevor Lawrence may well end up re-writing the entire college record book, and will be the first pick in the NFL draft.

Are you asking if a coach is really good if he doesn't have really good players?

True, but he has had the benefit of 7 straight #1 recruiting classes.

Recruiting is part of being a coach. I give Saban and Swinney credit. They both do the job very, very well.
