In theory, wouldn't college football players be playing harder than ever now?

Playing for the love of the game is great and everything. Real nostalgic and whimsical.
But I imagine that playing to get paid more next season or landing a bigger payday in the portal next season would be more incentive than playing for the love of the game, especially if your entire family back home is broke.
I was thinking about this watching the Ole Miss/Louisville game last night. It was an incredibly hard fought game. All the players who aren't draft eligible after this season knew that they were in the national spotlight and that assistant coaches from all over the country were watching them on TV. That's way more pressure to perform and leave everything on the field than playing for the love of the game.
I don't like how NIL has created free agency in college football either and how all players are now basically on one-year contracts, but there might be a few unintended consequences that are positives.

Maybe, but some are immature 18-20 years who get a lot of money and get lazy. But so do some pro players.

The best benefit is off the field issues have decreased a lot. Turns out money can motivate you not to frick up.

As long as it isn’t guaranteed money, you could make the effort assumption.

That's most of the smaller deals, the stars generally get most upfront and can negotiate that

None of these are performance contracts because the player would just sign where there isn't one.
For most of these kids it is life changing money whether they play hard or not.

Right now it's full blown NIL madness, and yet the cheapest ticket to the Oklahoma game in a few weeks is 370 dollars. 500 dollars to sit in the lower deck of the end zone.
Going from this to boarding up Sanford Stadium to keep the trespassers and ghost hunters out would be quite the leap!

Future earnings. Next season. NFL players are notorious for playing harder in contract years. Every season is basically a contract season for college football players.

Race baiting is one of my pet peeves and drives me up the wall. But this is a rare case that makes me stop and think.
For example I have yet to stumble across a thread on this board where all the college baseball posters are griping about NIL in college baseball and how NIL is killing the sport and college baseball is going to hell, even though the portal and roster turnover is just as bad in college baseball.
