Clearly an anomaly. Just weird shite going on. Drinks first MU coaching year and he went 5-5 when nobody expected anything close. MU fans embraced him, and then the next couple years had losing records counting bowl games, and fanbase turned on him. Now we love him! Fickle, fickle, fickle.
Best thing for Drink would have been:
2020 5-7 no bowl (instead of the unrealistic.500 record)
2021 6-7 loss in a bowl (hey, moving in the right direction)
2022 6-7 loss in a bowl (hmmm…let’s give him a little more time)
2023 Season to date 7-2 (LETS’ GO)
My point being 2020 was an F’up year. Drink happened to capitalize, but it set unrealistic expectations for a first year coach trying to build a program essentially from scratch when he really needed some time to get his guys on the field.
Truthfully though, I enjoyed the anticipation after the 2020 season that we were finally on our way. We may be, but it was obfuscated, by the premature conclusions on a non-representative season.

If we hadn't sucked out loud in the WLOCP, we would've faced Bama a 2nd time that season in the SECCG, but based on how strong the 2020 Tide squad was, I wouldn't have expected a different outcome.
Vandy pussed out and canceled our game in Athens, costing those Seniors their final home game/Senior Day recognition.

Alabama’s 2020 national title was the most impressive title in the history of man. 11 SEC wins. Nobody going to be doing that again any time soon.
Edit: Also Alabama played the top 11 SEC teams other than themselves that season. Only missed out on playing the two worst programs that year.

I’m thankful we got football at all. We didn’t have the greatest showing but it was cool to only play SEC teams.

KJ Costello throwing for 623 yards in Tiger Stadium is still the wildest thing I’ve ever seen on a football field. Especially if you kept up with how bad State’s offense ended up being the rest of that year.

I just remember being at Tiger Stadium and only having 2,000 people there. It was like being at high school football championship. The parking was great though, parked right next to the stadium for $10.
