I for one am very pleased with how our team has competed this year and will go to a bowl game which was not realistic with how hard we were hit with transfers. Now - can we reverse that and hit the portal ourselves and stock up for next season? I think the transfer portal is good for programs that need a quick turnaround because traditionally - it takes 3-4 years to build a roster through recruiting - now you can fill holes in 1 off-season. Not saying I like the new landscape of CFB.. but in this case - as a VOL fan desperate to get back to the glory days, we can use this to our advantage.

Does anyone that is any good want to come to Tennessee? That's the main question. Some offensive players may want to.

Tennessee gives players the chance to play immediately at a program with unrivaled fan support and a tradition that only 9-10 other schools can match. Yes - we will attract players this off-season.

This is correct. Tennessee is competing with everyone else in the portal- UGA, Bama, Oh St., Oklahoma, etc. Tennessee will be getting the leftovers. They only got 5* Cade Mays from UGA because he's a UT legacy, otherwise would have transferred somewhere else. The high ranking transfers don't usually go to middling schools which is what UT is right now. And realize the portal generally gives you guys who couldn't crack the 2-deep at their previous school. Most of them aren't day 1 contributors at their new school. There are outliers of course- Joe Burrow probably the most famous one. My point is the portal can be a band-aid at a particular position of weakness, but it isn't a cure for good old fashioned recruiting and development.

This is where I don't agree - no one is transferring to UGA and Bama when you already have 5 stars waiting their turn to play. They are transferring to play not to sit on the bench.

I'm buying what you're selling. UT is still a "brand", they are now stable and by all appearances on the up-swing. You can sell transfers on a plug-and-play especially on the D side of the ball. UT hasn't had the stability needed to be a real buyer in the transfer age- but they do (and will) now. The portal won't return UT to national prominence in a year...but it should be a key step in the rebuild process.

Tell that to JT Daniels, Derion (sp) Kendrick, Arik Gilbert

just off the top of my head.

5* JT Daniels former gatorade player of the year. Got hurt, transferred couldn't even play at UGA for most of last year due to that previous injury. Currently on the bench.

Arik Gilbert, 5* guy who was also a gatorade player of the year, getting plenty of time at LSU, decided to transfer to UGA who already had a 5* starter at TE. Not even on team right now.

Kendrick- highly rated CB who was getting time at Clemson, decided to come to UGA which also has a loaded DB room. Playing well and getting alot of time on the field, working out very well for him.

Are you inviting them to start listing names?

When Tennessee was good, they had a recruiting pipeline out of Atlanta that has ceased to exist. Can it be re-established? With Georgia Tech also on a mild upswing? With Clemson still raiding ATL? And not to mention Auburn and UGA taking what they want?

What you are saying is logical, why would you go to the bench at UGA when you could start at UT? The problem is the kids don't think like that. They think they are superman.

Jameson Williams leads the SEC in YPG, TD catches and total yards.

He transferred to Alabama from Ohio State.

The transfer portal is like free agency in the NFL. You can't expect to build a team with it, but you can smartly use it to plug some gaps in your roster or build depth.

And I can promise you he would rather be at Alabama right now than Ohio State.

Huh? They've won nine games over the last three seasons.

I agree. I didn't initially mean that we will be contenders in a year - I guess my main point is coaches can rebuild rosters quicker these days via transfers unlike the past when you have to recruit high schoolers and develop.

Our whole team transferred. So yes. But that is my point on how good of a job our staff has done this year and now they have some optimism to sell to transfers this off-season. Not saying we are even close to contending - but the timeline for us to get back to contending will be sooner than it would be in the past because of the portal. Just my opinion
