I'll say it again: Poor QB play is why the SEC is down

I just heard that there was not 1 SEC QB in the top 50 rankings in NCAA. WTH? How can the best conference in football not have 1 quality QB? That is insane. I think the B1G, ACC, B12 and Pac12 have all outpaced the SEC in developing QBs. What is happening here?

The SEC had a bunch of young QBs in 2016. The SEC QB play should be pretty good next season.

I don't know the source but it was for the upcoming 2017 year. Not 1 SEC QB in the top 50. That blew me away. How is that even possible? That is awful. I know there's a lot of young teams as well but you must develop the QB and it's just not happening.

You make it sound like this a trend. If we have very bad QB play next year, which I don't expect, then it might be something to look at.

I would like to see that list because that would be a very bad ranking

Well, if we are talking draft prospects that might make sense. Those guys won't move up draft boards until after next year (some of them won't even be eligible).
Also, I doubt that there is a Top 50 QB list that doesn't include Austin Allen on it.

As an LSU fan, I can SERIOUSLY relate to this. Its really bizarre. And its not like the top recruits don't come down south. I really wonder if the SEC coaching mentality in general is the reason for lack of QB development.

what are they rating? we going on QBR, passing yards, completion %, what? I'm assuming QBR.
That being said, Jake Bentley did finish in the top 15 in the nation for completion %. Now that in and of itself isn't the end all be all of stats but the fact that he was a true freshman and that he only played in 6 or 7 games means that the rest of the stats would have probably been in the upper echelon of QBs as well had he gotten the full season.

I agree about overall QB quality, but 1 thing that must be realized is that there are 4-5 teams in the SEC that have monster defenses and if stats are used to determine the top-50, then SEC QBs are at a disadvantage.

I think the list were qb's selected by sportswriters or something. It may not be tied to specific stats. I remember this article at the start of the season that talked about it as well. A lot of young guys that hopefully make a huge jump next season.

the big question is if the offenses are so poor because of good defense or are they just poor in general. I think you had 2 monster defenses in LSU and Bama. I don't think you had much more. Florida's defense got wrecked against Bama, FSU, Arkansas, and Tennessee. I don't consider that defense monster and I can't think of anyone else? Plus when your offense is so bad (specifically bad QBs that are not respected so teams crowd the box) the defense is hung out to dry and wears out in the 2nd half. I've seen that with many SEC teams this season.

The article seemed to use the stats of yds/gm and yds/attempt as the reason for their position that the QB play was down. Now I'm not saying that is what the "50 top QBs" post was using but Austin Allen is def up there in those categories.

I honestly couldn't name more than about two QBs per conference among the non-SEC power schools.

Big name or NFL QBs off the top of my head in other conferences
PAC 12 - Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold, Jake Browning, Luke Falk
Big 12 - Baker Mayfield, Patrick Mahomes, Mason Rudolph
ACC - Watson, Francois, Trubisky, Kaaya

A&M's shitty defense shut him down for most of the game, causing him to throw a career-high 3 INTs.

Sam Darnold, Jake Browning, Luke Falk
Agreed on all

Baker Mayfield, Mason Rudolph
Agreed on both

Patrick Mahomes
Already declared for the NFL

Only Francois is returning

SEC isn't the best but that's besides the point. Who is the best qb in the league? Dobbs, Eason, Hurts, Fitzgerald, Kelly?

It's a combo of bad quarterback play, arcane offensive philosophies, and a lack of good coaches.

I thought that Florida and Auburn, on most Saturdays, could be considered extremely formidable ( maybe even "monster" to many teams in other conferences).JMO

The conference had a lot of young QBs last year and will have a lot of young ones in 2017. The best QB in the conference was injured and missed part of the season. I think things will be a lot different in 2018 when these QBs have experience .
