National championships pre-BCS era don't count in my book.

Ole Miss had 2 "Natty's" before integration before black athletes played football....and I don't consider those as legitimate.

Back then you had multiple teams every year claim national championships due to various polls...so anything claimed that far back is bullshite.

I separate pre-poll era (before 1936) and poll era (1936 and on). Pre-poll era is just a wild west of NCs awarded. It’s kind of just whatever.

Poll era is pretty simple. Pre BCS/Playoff, you have a NC if you were #1 in the final AP Poll or the final UPI/Coach’s Poll. Early AP poll took a few years to be the standard but it happened pretty quickly.

Then you have a NC if you won the BCS Championship Game in the BCS era.

Then you have a NC if you won the CFP Championship game in the playoff era.

Anything else I don’t really count, as the above were the generally agreed upon/accepted standards of the various eras.

Right, I know Utah could claim 2008 like UCF claimed 2017.
