Ole Miss. Who the hell would want to go to Mississippi State except for Landscape Architects, Broadcast Meteorologists and Turf grass people? And even then, it's just a means to an end.

As others have said, it depends on what the major is going to be and what type of personality the kid has.

Agriculture, Computer related and engineering specialties, MSU.
Humanities and liberal arts, Ole Miss.
The business school are about even, with the exception of Ole Miss Accounting being elite nationally.

If your kid is somewhat preppy, Ole Miss is a much better place.
If your kid is more down home, MSU is a much better place.

If your kid's life will be over if they don't make the fraternity/sorority of their dreams, Ole Miss is a better place.
If your kid is indifferent about the Greek system, they can take it or leave it, MSU is a better place.

and I say the following as an MSU grad...

If you want to make good money and be seen at the Jackson Yacht Club or River Hills in VIP Jackson and the Northside Sun, Ole Miss is the place.

If you want to make good money and could care less if anyone ever knows you exist outside your family, MSU is the place.

I went to MSU, then grad school at LSU and moved back to the Jackson area (Madison). Ole Miss grads love them some society magazines and exclusive club memberships.

It depends on what you are going to study. Is that not obvious?

Holy crap, a fair, rational evaluation on the tRant. I salute you, Sir.

Sad you feel this way, but fact is if you go to college, do what you are supposed to do and actually attempt to excel, success can be had at any university. Furthermore, success will follow afterwards. That's the real point of it all. But continue on with your rant.

This is a fricking stupid generality that by no means is accurate. There are just as many frat stars in Starkville as in Oxford. The sorority scene may be a little more laid back at State but I doubt it is by much.

You can be a GDI and be fine at OM. Same at State. State has more of a relaxed atmosphere in general. Pulls mainly from MS, West AL and Memphis. OM is basically 50/50 in state to out of state kids. Yes there is a fair share of rich kid arse holes but after the first year they either aren't at OM or they are being douches in a frat. ( Not all frat kids are like this).

OM pulls from a more diverse population. Dallas, Nashville, Atlanta are the biggest and a fair share from the Carolinas. It's is a really small town where everyone knows everyone but it is almost getting too big.

You can have a good college experience at either school. But don't let the frat system be the deciding factor. Anyone can find a good group of likeminded friends and enjoy college.

You left out Engineering. Which is why I picked State over LSU.

I didn't mean it as an insult, but based on my friendships and life experiences, the Greek system is a much bigger deal at Ole Miss. They moved rush at Ole Miss 20-25 years ago because too many kids were withdrawing when they didn't get a preferred bid.

You are fine as a GDI, but if the Greek system is real important to you, Ole Miss is a better place. Would you disagree?

This is one of the coolest research projects in the SEC right now. 104 miles per gallon and 0 to 60 in 5.7 seconds.

Born and raised a UF fan and parents were from Florida. We moved to Mississippi right after I graduated highschool.

We had no biases and had cousins that had gone to each.

My dad had no interest in me going to MSU. He told me to visit OM. I did. Fell in love and ended up going there.

Does OM have a bigger number or percent of the student population in the Greek system? Probably but not by an outrageous amount.

I don't think "caring" about the Greek system is a deciding factor because at either school there are plenty of organizations to pledge that you will see as "the best" 10 years after you graduate.

The idea that you have to be Greek at OM is complete bullshite. But I'm probably in the minority and I have no issues with the Greek system.

Nor do I. I didn't say you had to be Greek at Ole Miss. I just think its a bigger deal at Ole Miss than MSU. Although MSU is quickly catching up in the give a damn department, I am being told.

You goed there and had a good quantity of education?

I feel like you probably "went" there and thought you had a good "quality" of education?

I am a lifetime Gator fan that now lives in AR. I would rather my kids go to either Ole Miss or Miss State than Florida, more Ole Miss than State.
In fact, both of my sons did go to Ole Miss when they could have gone to UF if they would have wanted to, although they are white males so probably would have had a hard time getting in with UF's ethnic diversity program in admissions.
While I support the Florida athletic teams as hard as any ever has, the liberal mentality and size of Florida would be a concern for me recommending anyone to attend UF. I say, "Go Gators, just don't go to Florida."

The butt hurt in this thread is at a level I've never seen.

Ole Miss is the clear winner. Your kid will have social skills, a great college experience, and friends/network throughout the country after he or she graduates. No school in the SEC West outside of Alabama has grown and improved the quality of education at the school more than Ole Miss in the past 20 years.

If you want to settle in Jackson afterward, send your kid to State.
