Assuming Imgur links work with the image tag.

could easily be done by replacing current bowl structure

Would ruin college football. Regular season would be meaningless.

The more meaningful games the better IMO, I like big playoffs, but i know a large portion of the CFB fanbase for whatever reason does not. Same people that will argue the regular season needs to remain so important yet most P5 teams play at least 2 if not 3 cupcake OOC teams.

I'd be fine with 12 or 16 teams if you want to keep bowls in-tact. With 24, you almost have get rid of bowls. I think with 12-16 you can still incorporate bowls into all games except maybe 1st round.

I think that's too big, but even if somehow it was determined that was the way to go you would have to shorten the regular season to at most 10 games.

The FCS doesn't have 24 teams, just 16

Incorrect, it's been 24 for years now

The biggest issue is that it would be 4-5 additional games (depending if you started with a bye or not). If we did this, we'd probably have to do the following:

Remove all non-conference games, and move to a 9 game conference schedule.

Conf champ contenders would play 10 games, so maximum would be 15 games (which is what it is now).

Depending on how you set it up, there would either be longer breaks between games (more byes during the regular season) or conf champ games would end up being played a month sooner.

No need for non-conference games, as teams would be afforded quite a few opportunities to do so - save for those that never make the playoffs.

FCS teams all play 11 games (that qualify for playoffs). I would not mind cutting our season's back to 11 games at all.

Dont need to do this really.

Shorten season to 11 games, 9 conference games for everyone. No conference championship games. Done.

FYI, I used the playoff rankings only. I made no considerations for conference champs, etc. That was not intentional to slight anyone - it was just more convenient to grab those 24 teams. I'm sure there would be tweaking to make some of those work.

Some strange positioning in there...

Oklahoma first round matchup between Washington St and TCU - potential rematch of title game for them in their first game.

Georgia first round between OSU and Notre Dame - potential rematch in first round.

Chance for Auburn to see Miss St again in round 1.

Alabama/tOSU - draw 2 G5 schools in their bracket, compared to none in the other 3.

Not saying that any are completely unreasonable, but there would seemingly be alternative seedings that might better disperse teams. (I know, not how FCS does it)

I think what we really see though, is that there is no real need for expansion... all it really succeeds in doing is giving teams that haven't really played well enough to win a NC the chance to do so.

I would be ok with choking things down to 10 games and having a 12 or 16 team playoff.

Basically, you'd seed based on the 10 games, then the end of the year would just be 4 playoff games. Home and Home until the final four to ensure getting a higher seed mattered. Guarantee champions of all leagues are involved and then have 4 or 5 byes.

So in the end smaller schools very much have something to play for, bigger schools can schedule eachother to get a better picture of who is the best and then the last 4 games feel like elimination regular season games.

Start the season in September as usual but have 2-3 byes each to ensure physical wear and tear is as limited as possible, start playoff games the 1st weekend in December, play 2 rounds before Christmas and the final four in the traditional New Years/week after slots. Alabama loses two games in September? You are still in, but congrats you get to play in East Lansing, MI in December. Those 10 regular season games will mean a helluva lot (ask the NFL).

You could do this, but most conferences are more than 10 teams. You could have ties.

And sort it out in the playoffs.

ETA - but the problem with all of this is the money involved in bowls and CCGs. Conferences, CCG sites and bowl sites would riot.

Well, like I said - I don't play with the seedings to make match-ups, I literally grabbed 1-24 in order from the playoff committee and plugged them in. Adjustments for better match-ups could easily be made if I was willing to put in the time.

Unless you made certain they played each other in the first round, that wouldn't work. Both teams could lose in their first games. Would that conference simply not have a champion that year?
