Thank you for this fun fact.

Also, I see you updated your profile to say you live in Griffin.

If you ever hear any stories about some buildings having a bunch of copper wiring stolen out of them, I didn't have shite to do with it and I know nothing about it. Besides, it was just sitting there waiting to be recycled. Whoever did it was doing it for the environment. Nobody likes strip mine operations.

Correct. But there were some debating it after Dani won his second.

That said, if you are saying it is way too early to make that career argument, then Dani is a perfect example. I think most felt he got a lot of his mojo from his coordinators though, and that seems to be correct.

No, but he would be one of only a handful of coaches to ever win a back to back NC. And the only non Bama coach to ever do so in the SEC.

Going back to the start of the AP poll, the list of back to back unshared champions is:

Minnesota ('40/'41 with Bernie Bierman)
Army ('44,'45 with Earl Blaik)
Notre Dame ('46,'47 with Frank Leahy)
Oklahoma ('55,'56 with Bud Wilkinson)
Nebraska ('94/'95 with Tom Osbourne)
Alabama ('11/'12 with Nick Saban)

Pretty esteemed company Smart would join with a win this year.

There were also other shared titles part of a back to back. USC in 2003-4, Bama in 1978-9, OU in 1974-5, Nebraska 1970-1, Michigan State 1965-6, and Bama 1964-5

So, has he got a ring on each finger? If not, the answer is no.

Only an idiot would say he’s passed Saban.

Winning it this year would put him 3rd in current coaches.

That’s really good, be happy with it. Just don’t make more of it than it is

I know Saban has more, but who else has more than 2 NC's as an active coach? Are you still considering Urban Meyer active?

Here's what I have as coaches all-time with 3+

Saban 7
Bear - 6
Bierman - 5
Hayes - 5
Leahy - 4
McCay - 4
Jones - 3
Camp - 3
Meyer - 3
Osbourne - 3
Rokne - 3
Royal - 3
Switzer - 3
Pop Warner - 3
Wilkinson - 3

to the OP:

ANSWER: YES, if Kirby wins it all this year and goes "B2B" on the Nattys, then he is the best college football coach at the current point/time.

Saban is the best HC in college football history and likely will remain so - although would be good to revisit in 7-10 years to see if Kirby can catch-up- not likely but it's possible.

With the transfer portal, NIL and now a 12-team playoff, it will be much more difficult for the top teams to dominate at a dynasty type of level that would be needed to topple Saban - so, in that regard, it's improbable that Kirby or anyone else can surpass - also I see with NIL and Transfer Portal - the burnout rate on these head coaches will be higher.

I largely agree with this. What could work for Kirby is longevity. I don't think anyone will win 6 titles in as short a window as Saban did at Bama. But if Kirby can keep his recruiting up, I can see a possibility where he averages 2 titles in each decade coaching. So let's say Kirby has 2 titles from 2016-2025, 2 more from 2026-2035 and 2 more from 2036 to 2045. That puts him at 70 years old (Saban's age now) with 6 NC's (compared to 7 for Saban now). 30 years as a college HC to 27 for Saban right now. At that point, the discussion might be warranted.

Eh, Josh has zero championships and I don't think anyone is trying to say he has less chins than Saban.

No. Stop asking silly questions.

A better question is if he will stay healthy enough to coach as long as Saban.

Saban is the best coach in college football until he’s not. Winning the NC is hard and 3 games remain just to get #2.

I’m thankful that CKS is at UGA but with coaches, analysts, and staffers numbering close to a hundred it’s hard to see him going past 60. That’s basically like being a CEO with a 100 employees. Most don’t hold that seat that long. It’s immensely stressful especially when you’ve already have a mid ten figure net worth.

I will say the way Kirby has built his team is the best way to consistently give yourself a chance to be good. Kirby recruits, develops, and coaches defense as well as anybody. QBs can be busts, but an elite defense and OLine buys you a lot of forgiveness.

And then, after having 40+ hung on them, Georgia caught Alabama a few weeks later without Metchie and Williams - two of their top offensive threats.

Don't be bitter. You'd legitimately kill Alabama this year.

The reality is that UGA had difficulty with Bama in one of the 8 quarters they played. UGA’s defense gave up 0, 0, 3, 3, 6, 7, 9, and 24 in the 8 quarters they played against Bama. Bama didn’t have a good game and a bad one against UGA. They had a great quarter and 7 mediocre to poor quarters against UGA.
