Now I have to go back and watch that game from 2000. Fortunately it is on YouTube.

Went back and looked. Toefield’s TD was early in the 1st quarter. No good camera angle to really see exactly when to ball came loose. It did look like he got the ball over the goal line before he fumbled, but it is all but impossible to confirm. If we had today’s cameras and angles, there would have been a definitive shot. It was certainly close.
As to the winning MSU TD in 1999, it was the last play of the game and the replay was definitive the player was down. But that is how the cookie crumbles.

How many could we not be able to tell because HD was only around at the end of that period? And back when they only had a couple of cameras at the game, that didn't help. Time travel would be useful in this case, but probably not the best use of that discovery.

Mississippi State at LSU 2000

LSU Player didn't cross the goalline as time was running out. Refs called it in anyway.

I thought it was instituted in 2010?

You’re telling me we had replay and this wasn’t overturned?

The only questionable touchdown in the 2000 game was in the early 1st quarter. State scored the last touchdown in regulation to tie the game with 2 minutes left, and LSU scored a touchdown in overtime. State failed on a 4th down try to end the game. At no point was a touchdown scored by either team with time running out.

The general idea was; what if you had the same technical support and advances they now have today?

2010 correct, yeah that would have been overturned.

The problem with replay is just like everything else- you can frick around with it if you want, and get the call you want.

I remember an LSU bowl game against Notre Dame where a TD was called, and it almost definitely was. And then- overturned on replay.

Not just replay, but the first time I'd ever seen "synchronized camera angles" or whatever, showing a maybe down on one angle, and a maybe not across the goal on another. With each individual angle being inconclusive as hell. But as I recall, the officials decided they wanted to do it that way, and took the score off the board, and I think it was the end of the half.

Point being, they can still frick you if they want to.

Didn't change the outcome, but any thread about calls before replays has to include AU/Vandy 2001
