Sankey did Florida no favors but the Gator's AD should get a 15-yard penalty for piling on. 3 OOC Power 4 teams are crazy with that SEC schedule.

It's probably close to reality if not exactly spot on.

If you had told me there's a chance we would retain a head coach at the University of Florida after 3 straight losing seasons a few years ago I would never believe it. Now I could see it happening barring something wild like a 3 win season.

The two main reasons for this:

1. The AD has to fire him. That would be his second football hire he had to fire. How many chances do ADs generally get to make the right football coach hire? How many get three? AD is basically tied to Billy at the hip so for Billy to get shitcanned they will likely need to shitcan the AD. However it seems like there is very little pressure on him since we do alright in other sports.

2. They are afraid to lose Lagway who has a high chance of portaling if Billy is fired. They've put all their eggs into the hoping Lagway is the next Tebow basket. They probably think giving Billy another chance with Lags as the starter next year is worth keeping him around despite being a god awful game day coach.

We're gonna suck again but at least we'll still beat Tennessee (again).

My next life. No doubt I want to be a major college coach and get fired after 2 years so I can be bought out.

Y’alls facilities were not competing in the SEC…now they are for sure.

There’s a very positive vibe in the Ops building, and every single person seems focused on doing the best job possible. I would bet no university has the athletic academic building like UF, place is a shrine.

The coaches DGAF about the schedule. They look at it like more opportunities to show people their class.

I’ll be pulling for them…except against LSU.

We have one of the top QB rooms in the country. Few teams have as good of a veteran as Mertz paired with as talented of a freshman as DJ.

their RB room is a respectable 4th

Probably fair. Montrell Johnson is 1st team SEC but the guys behind him, while talented and hyped, don't have experience.

Their WR room is 10th,

Tre Wilson will be a top WR in the country and we brought in a very talented and productive WR in Elijhah Badger that excelled in ASU's horrific offense (140 catches over the past 2 years). Our WR room is really good.

their OL and DL are both ranked 14th in the conference.

I can see the argument for our DL being bad, I can't see it for our OL. PFF has our OL ranked 10th in the country.

Hard to say. My guess is 7-5 if things don't collapse early. I will say even though we have addressed the depth issues that there are only 2 starters on this team that will make coaches adjust anything on defense or what play may be called on offense. Devin Moore on defense and Wilson on offense. I don't think the other players are elite SEC talent except some freshman who won't be starting.

It’s not just power 4 it’s not like he scheduled wake forest or Iowa st or some other program that can’t out coach you bc sec oline and dline make it impossible. He scheduled fsu and Miami. Two of the maybe 15 ooc schools that Florida doesn’t have a roster advantage on.

If they get it done against Miami they will be favored in every game until Uga except maybe tenn and Aggie. There is potential to leave uga game with only two losses if you can ride a Miami wins momentum through the middle of the season.

My biggest fear for the Gators is that things go south, Billy panics & throws Lagway to the wolves behind that porous OL and it ruins him.

QB was one of the one reliable things we had going last year, so that seems an unlikely scenario.

Lagway will get plenty of snaps though.

I predict a tough year for Florida with maybe 4 wins. Then Lane Kiffin and a return to unbridled optimism.

How do you think Mertz played lights out when he consistently threw short on 3rd and 4th downs to open guys who were no threat to get a 1st down? It's like his goal was a high completion % and no interceptions instead of trying to make good tight throws for a 1st down.

Well he played better than any QB other than Trask and Grier going back to Tebow. I'll take that.

Why don't you guys just fire Billy now? The longer that he's there the longer it will take to recover. I see no positives about waiting. Should have been let go immediately at the end of last year. Is the leadership in the Florida AD really this incompetent or is just more about complete apathy?

I agree others weren't good but Mertz stats were basically a product of playing it safe most of the time. I do hope he surprises me and changes that this season. It might be Napier stressing ball security too much to him. If not and we aren't doing good then imo we need to let Lagway get the reps as he is a grown man physically and I think he would hold up mentally.

I think he deserves a 3rd year to show something but if he is lost again he needs to go imo. He actually could get another season at 6-6 if Lagway takes over mid season area and shows promise. With Mertz the whole year I think he 100% gets canned with a 6-6 record.
