Nearly every team plays a 4-2-5 defense for a significant number of plays every game.

Feel like that’s not super rare but either way it’s a 3/4 loss team. They know it, we know it, just like we knew we’d be in trouble in 2020 but wanted to hold on to a great season. Difference was we won a title. Actually last time we were as lucky as Bama was this year (2007) we won a title too.

Georgia and Texas A&M are about the only teams with the personnel and scheme to take advantage of a lighter front in the SEC these days.

Regardless, Alabama spent most of 2023 in 3-3-5 or 4-2-5 anyway.

Oh, for sure. We’ll have the 2nd most talented roster in the SEC, staring 4-5 losses right in the face.

A&M had the 3rd most talented roster in 2022 and finished 5-7 so it's not out of the question

And was a pretty good defense. Most of the trash talking morons don’t know even know what they’re watching

Why? You got another Heisman QB that can spend the 4th quarter hiding in the tent?

Everyone plays some variation of 4-2-5 for some plays these days. This isn't 2009.

But who knows what Alabama's base D is going to be with 6x Co-DCs...

I think Deboer is a good coach and Bama will be in the playoff this year. I question his ability to recruit to the almost impossible Bama standard, but I think he's a proven coach.

Having said that, a talented roster alone won't cut it. A&M had the 3rd best roster in the SEC last season talent wise and... well they weren't the 3rd best team. They were more like 8th.

For those who think Deboer isn't a good coach, predicting 4-5 losses isn't ridiculous. Talent with a bad coach = Texas A&M.

So a nickel defense? You realize that's pretty much the base defense that most teams run now, right?

Some use a 3-3-5 more than a 4-2-5 as their nickel-base.

Bama fans would know better, but I think they tended to go with 3 down linemen more than 4 under Saban. I know Kirby ran that at Bama and took it to UGA. Don't know if Bama went to a 4-man front after he left.

Changing between the 3 and 4 man front is a significant change. When UGA went from the 4-man to a 3-man front, the only DL who was really successful at going from a hands down DE to a standing up rush OLB was Justin Houston. It took time to get the right kind of DL/LB on the roster before the move really paid any dividends.

By all indications it will be what Wommack ran at his DC and HC stops preceding his move to Alabama. 4-2-5 with essentially 3 safeties: one a middle of the field safety, one a safety/corner hybrid, one a safety/linebacker hybrid.

My biggest concern with Alabama's defense in 2024 is cornerback and really just the field corner position. Currently have a 2nd year and 1st year player as the probably depth chart there.

Is LSU going to have one of those this year?
