If we are talking '57, bowl games were not a determining factor in declaring the national title (right or wrong, that's how it was). The probabation, which was known going into the season, that year did not exclude us from being voted one as the national champion. So, not the same thing at all.
'93, I agree and since we were ineligible for whatever the method of determining the national title, would not be one I would claim.

I'm pretty sensitive to Auburn reputational/ethical type stuff and I don't care about this at all. I'm not fist pumping nor am I hanging my head about it. It's mostly for fun, for internal recognition and adding lore that mostly Auburn people will care about and outsiders will shrug their shoulders about.

USC was voted #1, though, by the AP. Some schools only claim wire service titles, such as Notre Dame and Penn State. It has some merit.

Penn State NC claims incoming? Their policy is to only acknowledge wire service titles, like Notre Dame, but they had 3 undefeated teams that didn't finish #1.

The BCS was formed specifically to stop this sort of nonsense. USC didn't even make the title game and still claims the natty just because some West Coast sports writers "voted" for them.
What AU is doing for 1983 and 2004 is no different.

Look, all fun aside
I wouldn't hold it against any team to claim a title for an undefeated season if it came during an era where that team was playing a high level schedule/was in a high level conference.
It's one the most defensible "unofficial" claims IMO.

The AP voted Auburn #1 in 1983 and 2004? I think USC’s 2003 claim is dumb considering all the schools co-signed on the BCS determining the champ, but the USC 03 claim is not analogous to Auburn claiming 83 and 04
