Bama is tied with ND for AP National Championships with 8. Far cry from 14.
Guess the guy that decided to award NC's a couple years after was dead before AP started doing their poll.

ND, got 5 AP titles without even playing in a Bowl. No bias in the NE Media in those days.

That was prior to the 1964/1965 season, not 1973. Just sayin' brah.

The UPI still handed out a title before the bowl game. Bama was the reason both the AP and UPI decided to start crowning their champions after the bowls (due to finishing the regular season ahead of the team that would eventually beat them in the bowls).

ND also screwed 'Bama out of the 1966 and 1977 titles. 77 was a little more fricked up than 1966, IMHO.

Payback for 1966 bitch. ND has no legit claim to the 1966 title. It is rightfully Bama's. No rational argument can be made otherwise. Yet ND claims it (sad and pathetic), and Bama doesn't.

So are you really saying only AP titles count? LSU fans are not gonna be happy about that.

Not as golden as bama fans coming in and posting about ND claiming false titles. Those two schools deserve each other, they should start their own conference.

BAMA's number doesnt matter. All that matters is that it's a lot and it's more than anyone else.

So you're one of those self-proclaimed "football historians" who tries to claim champions did not exist prior to the AP?

Remember when Au's official website claimed 1913, 1983, 1993 and 2004 as NC's for their football time?

I do.

Oklahoma claims the 1950 national title after losing the Sugar Bowl to Bear Bryant's Kentucky team.

(National Titles were given out before the bowls)

Also, ND didn't even go to bowls until 1972 i think. They claim national titles before then without even playing in bowls. Auburn in 1957 did the same, ineligible for bowl because of paying players...still got the AP title.

There we have it. The 2003 national title is all USC's.

UPI awarded them the NC. Did you notice ND claims 66, when Bama was the only undefeated team that year? Or 5 other NC's when they didn't even play in Bowl games?

This really should have ended the thread.

Hunter clucked this thread up with the quickness.

Well played, Hunter.

Texas and OSU also have similar claims.

It seems to me that Bama got screwed in 1966 and got a break in 1973 due to the timing of the UPI vote. I believe that was the reasoning behind the UPI changing their vote until after the bowl games. The retroactive national titles from the 20's and 30's (I won't mention 1941) seem ridiculous, some are individual fans and a fricking geologist that decided to start their own systems. But if you need 13 I guess I don't really give a shite, maybe you guys can give old Wayne a call if you lose to ND (please don't)?
