I’d like to know. If UGA decided to take basketball seriously, new arena, bball specific facilities, top flight coaching staff. What would it take?

It's not about the arena, it's about people in the seats in the arena. Georgia just doesn't have a big basketball culture.

You need to ask Will Wade.

I think the sheer randomness of winning the NC is harder In Basketball bc you can get a 6 seed that has two strong guards and a couple defensive bigs and you can get hot shooting and win the thing. But the incremental cost of maintaining a winning football team is much higher. This is why I have mad respect for Auburn recognizing the opportunity in the SEC in basketball and making it happen.

It’s an energy and investment issue. There are plenty of basketball fans in GA. Give them a product.

Hawks gave a good product last season. Empty stands this season. Unless the Heat or Bulls etc are in town, then their transplants show up and outnumber the Hawks fans.

You have to get lucky and hire a great coach. Bruce fell into Auburn’s lap.

Duke had to give Zions parents a million dollar home. No telling what else they got.

So Id say probably $5 million a year for a couple years to buy a championship.

Not hiring a guy who couldn't even win with Indiana's resources is a smart start

Hawks games weren't a hot ticket in Atlanta even when the Hawks made the playoffs 10 straight years, maybe for the playoff games and games against Kobe/Lebron but not for most of the games. I went to a Grizz/Hawks game when both teams were solidly playoff teams several years back...paid about 20 bucks for great seats at mid-court in the lower level and the arena might have been half full

I'm sure this is meant as a troll, but it's also sort of a valid answer.

Wade has been consistently top 25/NCAA tournament, with usually at least one win. He took over a program where Johnny Jones had us about NIT level. Trent Johnson started with an NCAA team, and brought it down each year.

How much does a guy like Wade cost? You're talking a young guy with good success at a respectable mid-major. You don't want the old guy from there, he's probably set in his ways and not likely to work extra at a big program/conference. May not be able to adapt, etc.

When you get him, you have to commit enough to show you're serious, or he will hop to the next big program that offers more.

With SEC money, there's really no reason a strong football program can't also have a strong basketball (and baseball, for that matter) program too. Look at Wade, Oates, etc. They cost a drop in the bucket compared to football, and football is up to speed already.

And they had good attendance last year. The United Center in Chicago has been empty for 25 years until the Bulls started winning again this year.

The year Atlanta United won the MLS cup, they averaged 75k per game…for soccer….in Georgia.

And a bunch of transplants who think MLS is on the same level as the NFL/MLB/NBA.

Every year that passes Atlanta becomes less of a transient city. It’s now the 7th biggest city/market in the United States. The Hawks are starting to win again and attendance is rising again.
