I was there throughout 70s. That thing was not Alabama related. It is probably a mascot of a team about to be slaughtered.

That picture is almost definitely from the 80's but I have never seen a reference to a bird mascot anywhere else.
Looks like it's on a page from the Corolla, maybe?
ETA - Found it. It was in the 1982 Corolla. How freaking weird is that?

on 40 year old Corolla research skills Judging by the fan attendance, I'm guessing early 80s baseball was on par with summer league club baseball promotional nights. Had to try a little bit of everything. That said, you would have thought it would be a YellowHammer (sounds more like a bat). Cardinals are as common as Tigers for mascots. Very unoriginal
Wonder how long it lasted.
