With many fans it starts as kids. My grandpa was a huge Alabama fan(and looked a good bit like Bear), so my uncles were Alabama fans who kept me in it even after he passed. Some of my earliest memories in life revolve around watching Alabama play Auburn(back then most games weren't televised).
