They routinely recruit at the level of Kentucky or Vandy but they routinely produce top ten teams. Barry Alvarez has built a force up there. How do they do it? From a few things I’ve read, they’ve vertically integrated the football program so that H.Ss in the state run the same system as UW and that way they seamlessly integrate them once they get to UW. Why don’t some programs in the SEC try this?

Please don’t get all “Wisconsin wouldn’t survive in the SEC” on me because they would whoop the arse of all Sec team sans Uga and Bama.

It helps to play Indiana, Purdue, Minnesota, and Iowa instead of Alabama and Georgia.

Don't they have a losing record vs the SEC all-time?

1. Good coaching. They play a solid style of football that fits their personnel.

2. They play in the Big Ten West, a very weak division and as such are able to win a lot of games, this helps their visibility and reputation and slightly inflates their ranking most years.

If that's the case, then that's smart on their part. I wondered if Nebraska did the same during the Osborne heyday.

I know the midwest produces great coaches.

Playing in an inferior conference they only have one single season in the past 7 with less than 3 losses (that being last year). Wisconsin is kinda like petrino-era arkansas; definitely a good team, will scare everyone they play, beat some teams they shouldn't, but ultimately not really amount to anything of note nationally.

Sumlin was basically running the local high school system at a college level and it didn’t work in the SEC.

This pretty much tells you all you need to know. Bert basically extended the same system that he used at Wisconsin and it obviously did not work in the SEC. I do admire Wisconsin though as one of those unique teams that definitely do more with less.

There isn't much evidence, but watching LSU play them a few years back was painful. I didn't see anything from them that tells me going 9-0 in the B1G is difficult. It took Brandon Harris embarking on his journey to be UNC's worst QB ever for us to barely lose.

I thought Bert was going to make Arkansas into the Wisconsin of the SEC. I wondered why he wasn't able to, and then I actually watched Wisconsin play and realized that maybe he did.

They are in the West.

They are well coached and have a system that plays to their strengths - midwestern farm boy offensive lines road grading football.

However they have a predictable ceiling and usually falter against teams with higher class athletes. They would hold their own in the sec at a level consistently below conference champion caliber.

They seem to always have a hoss o-line with NFL prospects along with a stud or 2 at RB.

Ok, easy to go 9-0 was too much. But why do we keep seeing a team like Iowa or Wisconsin coast through a regular season only to get whooped once or twice at the end by a real team? The divisions are garbage at best. Every team doesn't have to play a tough one. It's like those years Mizzou won the east, except it's always like that instead of a blip.

Why do people keep bringing up Bert at Ark... Wisconsin would have beat the shite out of any year he was at Ark. it’s More of the Wisconsin system that has been in place for years than just Bert. Bert was just a part of that. SEC fans are quite arrogant. Wisconsin would be a top 4 team in the SEC no question year in and year out. They’ve proven that by beating SEC teams year in and year out. Outside of Bama
