How do you "rank" college national championships?

For me, it would rank like this:
1. Football, of course.
2. Basketball. Nowhere near as important as football, but far more important than all the other sports.
3. Baseball, women's basketball. Slightly higher than other sports, but far behind men's basketball.
4. Softball, men's and women's soccer.
5. Everything else. Track, golf, tennis, lacrosse, wrestling, anything organized and formally competitive (i.e., not intramural.)
Women's sports are harder to rank - some people really care about them, others care no more about any of the women's sports than they would golf or tennis. This is just my subjective weight, admittedly biased, but not to a ridiculous extent imo.

Depends on the region

By "actually won" and "claimed by Bama"

I think your list is pretty spot on.
The gap between football/basketball and the rest of college sports can only be envisioned by tubing through the Grand Canyon.

Use of that word should be a bannable offense in the offseason.

I think basketball is pretty close, or at least not 'nowhere near as important'. Having been in school when UF won both, I can tell you winning one didn't feel any better than winning the other.

The titles we won in Jan 07 and Apr 07 didn't feel all that different . Beating OSU made it fun both times

I think baseball will be the most controversial. College baseball is just not anywhere near the other sports compared to the relationship between the Major Leagues and NFL/NBA. Where it fits is very subjective.

That's what I was saying. Football and basketball are both top tier. The rest are so far behind in terms of popularity or "prestige."

I have track above men and women's soccer...everything else is about the same for me though.

That's why I said it depends on the region. In the northeast and Midwest, hockey would be number 3. In the mid-Atlantic and northeast, men's lacrosse would likely be above baseball.

I don't follow the need for ranking national championships much less from different groups.
I just don't get the question in general....

HandGrenade is spot on, I think.
As for track, I can't imagine why anyone considers it higher than soccer or any other individual competition like tennis or wrestling. And the fact that the same participant can win so many different events has to make it suspect in prestige. It would be like giving a basketball team a championship for winning the tournament, then another won for points, assists, rebounds, and blocked shots.
