How do players have money for "things" while in college????

I was listening to ESPN radio and can't remember which show but some former player was saying that players should get "a little something" as all big schools make money off of these kids ... said that the NCAA rule is that the athletes can't have jobs.
He also said that he understands being given $ to "take his girl out to dinner".
1) Is it true that athletes are prohibited from having jobs by the NCAA? How the hell do they pay for gas, food in their apt, dates, etc.?
2) If they're not allowed to have jobs as this guy said how do they get ANY money? I mean they've got to have underwear and socks.
I'm assuming that there are players who have assistance (full or partial) from their families but I'm sure that some have NONE from their families.
Thanks ... just curious.

Well that's what I'm wondering. We're fortunate at this point that our son is focusing on school and not working. You never know when that could change and he'd HAVE to have a job.
I KNOW that many kids don't have the support system of mom & dad and that's why I ask.
Can they work in the summer or is it NEVER?
Any former athletes on here??? Is it worth it to be an athlete to be worried about money all the damn time???
I go back to basics ... underwear, toothpaste, haircuts ...

They are allowed to have jobs during certain time frames.
That is what got OU in trouble a few years ago. Players had summer jobs where they weren't actually showing up even and getting paid big salaries/paychecks.
Furthermore, the students meals are covered like many other scholarship kids. It's like the dorm meal plan.
Also, if I am not mistaken, they receive a small stipend each semester/quarter like some kids do with TOPS.

Right but they're not all on campus ... guess they could all still do this.
Anyway, I just feel for the kids ... they're kids who want to do kid things.
Thanks to all .....

1.) I think they're allowed to have jobs in the summer and whenever, but they generally don't because they have workouts all year around and generally don't have the time.
2.) All the money Mom and Dad save for not having to pay his tuition. Plus, unlike home, parents don't have to pay for his food or some things like that because of meal plans, etc.

what if a LSU athlete qualifies for TOPS, do they get to keep the money?

I assure you no scholarship player at a major university is hurting for money. They get school for free, rent for free, food for free, stipends on trips, and various other gift or prizes such as bowl games gifts, etc. It easily totals 10k worth of stuff each semester.

Not sure about that ... that's how it works with academic scholarships though

this is why the NCAA should allow a stipend...how the hell do they expect these athletes to live? what's wrong w/giving these kids a couple hundred bucks a week? i'm sure they get tired of cafeteria food, would like to watch a movie from time to time, it's basic common sense...

The guy on the radio is the one who got me thinking about it when he said something about them wanting/needing money to "take their girl out to dinner". Broke my heart ... but I'm a mom and a softy.

I do not think that it is a violation since it is not by an agent and there is stipulation behind it. I am sure many other places around the country does the same for football players. Free meal just like going to BCM/Catholic Student union and eating for free.

Oh boo frickin hoo.
They get a college education. THAT is their payment. And if their parents don't have money for extras, they qualify for very good grants and loans.

Athletes get everything paid for and they get an allowance every week or month I can't remember which time frame. It's not a lot at all, but as long as they eat their meals on campus, they make some money that way
