what if a LSU athlete qualifies for TOPS, do they get to keep the money?

Not sure about that ... that's how it works with academic scholarships though

ROTC scholarships at LSU work the same way and you get free room and board.....

For bowl game a few years ago didn't players get up to 1000 bucks worth of stuff in a "goody" bag given by the bowl sponsor?

Oh boo frickin hoo.

They get a college education. THAT is their payment. And if their parents don't have money for extras, they qualify for very good grants and loans

I know ... but how'd you like to date a player and dude couldn't take you to the movies? That's the only reason I'm asking ... just curious. I'm not crying about it ... I was just thinking about them not being able to have a job for the "basics and extras".

There is probably a stipulation in their scholarship where they are awarded like 500 a month or something. I mean if I had 500 a month with no other bills I could work with that each week.

Uh, hell yeah ... If I was in college and had no "bills" I could work with less than that.

They make it work and they have made it work in the past. I am sure they earn money some how at every school.

500 per month is the approximate stipend that a ROTC cadet gets in their junior and senior years....that's a very reasonable amount when you consider that everything else is provided.....

he doesn't have to live on campus.....there are a few tricks of the trade i can pass on that might seem odd on the surface, but will set him up in the longer run.....

The amount it "costs" to go to college is set by student aid programs. In my case back in the late 90's it was around 34k a year. TOPs and other scholarships were subtracted and I was eligible to get student loans for the remainder, i.e. living money. Every student is treated the same when it comes to this amount. Most full rides come with room, board, tuition and books. This may or may not equal the total available funds. If not, borrow the rest.

He's a freshman right now ... didn't do ROTC this year because the commute for 6 am pt would have him leaving home at 5:15 in the am ... he'll be tranferring to LSU next fall and doing the first year to "make sure" ... as a mom my heart is like "NO!" but when I ask him why he just says "why did you want to be a mom?" which I say "I just did" and he says "well, I just do"! Proud of that BUT he's my child ...

May hit you up for info later!

that's why if you come from a very poor family you have no choice to rob a gas station, i.e Nukeese Richardson.

I was hoping someone would point this out. They still have access to Pell Grants, etc.

I played small college basketball, but it was on scholarship and under NCAA rules. It probably works alot different at big schools but this was my experience: At our school the scholarship covered tuition, room, meal plan and books. You could get a cash equivalent for the room and meal plan. Many athletes did this and then lived off campus. Often, if you roomed with enough people, living off campus was cheaper and thus money was left over from the room check. Also, if they qualified, many of my teamates were able to receive pell grants on top of their scholarship. Also, most of us worked summer jobs and some got money from parents.
