I'll be honest - I wasn't sold he was a sure thing. I was pulling for Rich Rod to get the job and was disappointed when he backed out. Hindsight, as they say, is 20/20.

Shortly after he arrived at LSU, I began hearing of how he was getting rid of players left and right. Several of them were highly regarded and I remember thinking...what the hell is this guy doing? He has no clue!

The only thing I knew about him was that LSU had beaten him in the Indy Bowl.

Yep, now you know why I don't offer many opinions about football and football coaches.

When he left LSU for the Miami Dolphins I felt that he would have them in the Super Bowl by his fourth year. I think if he had stuck around that he would have had them winning the Super Bowl in one or two more years.

I believe the one thing he has that makes him successful is that he doesn't give a rat's arse about people's feelings and opinions. He is focused on doing it the right way (his way) and doesn't cave into political pressures.

This is good stuff. Reflects a bit of LSU fan
jealousy over the hire, plus a dash of thinking
maybe Saban was washed up after Miami. Whatever,
it all amounted to DEAD WRONG. One of my favorites:

If Saban could have held on another year or so with the Dolphins he might
have had a shot at the Michigan or Penn State jobs.
Their fan base would be a much better fit for Saban. Saban isn't the Aw Shucks Good Ole Boy
with a can of Skoal in his backpocket
that the Bamas love. Hell he probably doesn't
even have a gun-rack in his Mercedes

I think you got the point.

I knew he'd be good at Bama based on what he did at LSU but what he's done at Bama has been nothing short of phenomenal... I figured he'd match his LSU success and make Bama relevant again but 5 national titles in 14 years with no signs of slowing down?!?!! INCREDIBLE... I don't think that any Bama fans thought he'd bring our program to this level... I, personally, didn't think he'd be at Bama this long... Didn't think any college program could lure him away but I figured he'd wanna give the NFL another chance... GLAD that he'd didn't...

This from a guy who was an LSU fan then changed his fandom to Alabama:
quote:

He looks out-of-place at Bama. You can tell he'd give his right arm to be back at LSU. But, he's YOUR problem, now.

quote:

As I said earlier, he's your problem now. P.S. When he was at LSU EVERYBODY wanted him. Who wants him now???

Probably a good thing this guy hasn’t posted in 12 years.

Nothing proves great coaching like barely beating a middle of the pack CUSA team that lost it's quarterback and best player last year. Good job Nick, keep it rollin'.

Oh it rolled! 5 national titles and 7 national championship game appearances in the last 11 years proves it was a great hire!

Is this a natural aging process or is it stress and disappointment for taking a job and dealing with the most delusional fans in college football? His days are numbered. I say he's gone faster than expected, probably 2 more years of Nicky and that's it.

I first realized he was a big deal when I saw him strut out onto the field, with those tiny little strides, and just dominate Western Carolina. That's when I knew we had a good one; I love that little midget.

There was never a moment where I thought Saban was a sure thing. I knew we would get better under him but I had tempered my expectations considerably as I grew up in an era of Alabama Football that wasn't kind to the fans. There were also negative nancies in the press who believed that Saban wouldn't enjoy the same success at Alabama as he had at LSU due to the image he had inadvertently crafted for himself as a hired gun. And how many rival fans echoed that sentiment by proclaiming that Saban wouldn't be at Alabama for more than four or five years?

After his first season where he went 7-6, losing to UL-Monroe in the process, I had accepted that this might be a tough rebuild (if it could be rebuilt at all). The now-legendary recruiting class of 2008 gave me hope for the future, but it wasn't until the end of the Clemson game to start that season that I realized we might have something special on our hands.

Combining that with Alabama’s tradition (of cheating) and he was a no brained big time hire.

More of the LSU mentality, anyone who beats us must be cheaters, while the NCAA is about to lower the boom on LSU. LSU must destroy everything in order to say we're the best.

Whatever Bama fans didn't know, neither did Nick Saban. Years ago, he stated he had always wondered what it would be like to coach at a place like Alabama. Just like meeting the right person in your life so is that perfect job. The chemistry was there from hello. Nothing about college football that coach Saban wanted to succeed at that wasn't in Alabama's DNA as well. The perfect match. And the results have been absolutely amazing by anyone's standards.
