How did Rick Barnes get this “second wind”?

He’s 26th all time in total wins. He really made a name for himself at Texas when they ended a long Final Four drought. They were an OT loss against LSU from returning to the Final Four in 2006. He had the Horns ranked #1 at one time. Then he sort of hit a wall and couldn’t get Texas past the first weekend in the Tourney.

Fast forward 10 years and the Vols are #1 fresh off an appearance in the Elite 8. You don’t usually see this happen with coaches.

Solid coach. Seems like a good guy. Wish LSU had him.

Honestly, the knock on Barnes is that he doesn’t outkick his coverage in the Tourney. His teams tend to play to their seeding. But hell, his programs are usually consistent.

I said this in a thread about while back, when they hired him I thought it was a mistake, but he's proven me wrong. He's an excellent coach. They are lucky to have him.

He's a future college basketball HOF coach. We are incredibly lucky to have a coach the caliber of Rick Barnes serving as the steward of our basketball program.

He is originally from western NC. Maybe getting back to his roots helped with the revitalization.

having roster continuity by not chasing the 1 and dones is the biggest difference. maybe cal will do the same

Rick Barnes was a victim of his own success. He was always a good coach with Top 20 teams.

He was a plus coach & recruiter, good enough to take the top recruits from Kansas, Kentucky, the Carolina’s etc. He had a pretty constant parade of “one and dones,” but never had the continuity to win it all. Every year seemed to be a rebuilding year, good, but never good enough.

He has certainly ushered in continuous yearly roster stability at his Tennessee program.

We've had a couple one and done's in this past decade now of Barnes holding reigns of our program. But for the most part Tennessee basketball every year always has a roster full of guys that opposing fans think have been with us for half a decade.

Look at Andy Reid.

Sometimes a change of scenery helps.

New scenery is all it takes sometimes, that said, Barnes still has underperformed in the tourney given some of his outstanding regular season teams.

No way in hell he should have lost in the S16 with Durant and Augustin, and several Tenn teams that were really good he didn’t get out of the 1st weekend

this is exactly why - Hickory foothills - Knoxville is a natural fit for him - he came home 10 years ago and he's happy -

For sure. He made Texas hoops relevant on the national scene.

It's a shame such a classy guy has such a trash arse fanbase supporting him.
