How did Kentucky manage to sign Tim Couch before the 1996 season?

I know times were different and I was watching football at the time but didn't really follow recruiting at all as I was fairly young but I always just assumed it was Mumme's/Leach's air raid that lured him there but after watching some old games on YouTube it's become apparent to me that Couch signed with them while Bill Curry was still the coach and the decision to go to a coach like Mumme was more a move to keep Couch from transferring away than the one that got him there in the first place

I know recruiting was different across the board back then as well where great players could more easily slip through the cracks but best I can tell that wasn't the case with Couch as he was pretty high profile and even Tennessee was after him but I'm sure with Peyton being there and the depth we eventually had at QB he wasn't crazy about signing up for riding the bench for that long

That makes some sense; I had thought I had read he played in Texas in high school but now that you've said this I checked into it and you are right he was in KY

Still impressed they got him

His dad would have disowned him if he went to Tennessee

His dad hated Tennessee and left the house when Fulmer and Cutcliffe visited.

If I remember correctly Dontae Hightower didn’t meet with Phat Phil when they came to his high school in Columbia, Tn.

Hightower was from Lewisburg. Lewisburg, Pulaski, and Fayetteville were more Alabama than Tennessee back then. Columbia Central is my alma mater, and I can assure you that if Fulmer wanted a kid from Columbia, he got him 95% of the time if he had SEC talent.

He commited to UT when they visited him at home. His dad stormed out of the visit and got in his truck and drove off. He backed off the commitment after that. IIRC he was also about to transfer to UT after his freshman season. But they hired Mumme.

Even without Tennessee getting him I assume there were some other big time options but maybe not

Obviously between his dad and being from Kentucky, UK had a strong pull on him

Kind of off subject but Kentucky wasn’t exactly very good in football because they were more a basketball program, so I was kind of happy when they rotated onto our schedule. But when they did they had Couch, then again when they had Lorezan. Dammit boy. Same with Vandy,we got Cutler and such. Talk about bad luck.

But Couch was good no doubt.

Also...remember that Couch thought he was going to start as a Freshman at Kentucky (but the brilliant Bill Curry had the insight to start Billy Jack Haskins that season instead). Tennessee had a pretty good QB with 2 more years of eligibility. Can't remember his name, but he had a huge forehead and was the #1 Pick in the NFL after his Sr. year.

Couch was both from Kentucky and knew he would not be starting as a Freshman and probably not as a Sophomore at Tennessee (depending on what the huge forehead decided to do).

I'll never forgive Bill Curry for a lot of things but giving Tim Couch his first start against Florida and running the fricking option all day takes the cake.
