How Damaging is the "Auburn" Killer/Manhunt to Auburn's National Brand?

I first want to say this could happen to any school. So please leave snide remarks about Auburn out of this thread.

The news media is reporting this crime and search for the killer using "Auburn" in every report. It's sad because it's your typical stereotypical "Young Black Youth" party where guns show up with liquor and someone starts shooting. This is not unique to Auburn and did not happen on Auburn's campus. If this happens at any other SEC or College University the media will use the schools name in identifying the crime. I also realize Auburn football players were killed and wounded.

So my question is this, is it fair or right that this crime and manhunt for the killer being called the "Auburn" whatever in every report? And how damaging is this for Auburn, athletic recruiting and it's image?

In Penn State's case with regards to Jerry Sandusky Penn State is legitimately getting hammered because it happen at Penn State and was covered up by Penn State officials. But this Auburn shooting and killing was off campus and not a sponsored Auburn event. I do realize Auburn University is in Auburn, AL and that complicates things for the Auburn brand. I just hate the hit Auburn University seems to be taking with all the national attention this manhunt is making.

Not going to hurt them at all IMO. Didn't hurt VT. Why should it hurt Auburn?

Most of the media has pointed out how unusual something like this happening in AU is, so after the gunman is caught and this leaves the news, I don't think it will have much of a lasting impact.

It is what it is, the easiest way to title the crime or give it an identity.

Is not like Auburn's national light was shining in a positive way to being with but this situation has nothing to do with Auburn athletics. If the guy is caught today or very soon it shouldn't have more attention than it is getting now but if the hunt goes on for another month or two, who knows what it will look like.

What hit? Who is giving the University any national attention? Has the University President said a word?

Auburn is more of a regional brand anyway.

The West Coast probably is completely unaware of the incident anyway. Heck, they aren't aware of much to begin with.

From what i've got from the media is them saying Auburn as in the town, not the university.

Do all the murders in BR hurt LSU's "national brand"?

Does LSU have a national brand?

I'm not sure how you even quantify that.

I doubt there are very many LSU fans outside the region that don't have some affiliation to the school.

In the second recruiting season after the Sandusky bomb dropped Penn State is not suffering as it relates to recruiting.

The only B1G teams recruiting better are Ohio State and Michigan, the only SEC teams recruiting better are UGA, Bama, Florida and Auburn.

If Penn State can survive Sandusky, Auburn will not be damaged by the incident.

I think Auburn will be fine. The only thing I wonder about is how quick the reporters were to tag the casualties as "Former Auburn Football Players". What was that about?

same as in lawsuits you go after the ones with the largets pockets, in the news you associate and tag with the biggest name you can
