re: How come Alabama and Oklahoma never played each other in the '70s?

Coincidentally, I walked on the field at Gaylord Memorial Stadium in Norman today. While I was standing on the sideline formerly roamed by guys like Wilkinson, Simms, Switzer, and Peterson, I was thinking that this would be a great rivalry to renew.
Maybe something like the ten year home and home series that Bryant signed with Penn State?

I would love that, but still want a home-and-home wit Notre Dame, however unlikely now.

quote:I do remember Don James. Washington was probably a sub-.500 team when Alabama scheduled them. We beat them the year they went to the Rose Bowl but had to forfeit. Missouri was winning a 2 to 4 games per year when Alabama scheduled them. The only 2 consistent winners he scheduled over his career were Nebraska and USC. Just the truth. Vaught was the only one who scheduled softer than Bryant
You obviously don't remember Don James at Washington. Alabama played them in 1975 and 1978. James was already turning the Huskies into what they would become in the 80s and early 90s. They finished second in the Pac-8 in '78.

Washington had a winning record both years the played UA in the '70's. Missouri averaged just shy of 8 wins per season the three years they played UA.
Interestingly, both were better teams than MSU in that era.

Does Bryant get credit for scheduling teams that were above-average at the time of the contract but had slipped by the time of the actual game?

Alabama played UW in 1975 and 1978.
Washington: 1970, 6-4; 1971, 8-3; 1972, 8-3; 1973, 2-9; 1974, 5-6; 1975, 6-5; 1976, 5-6; 1977, 10-2; 1978, 7-4; 10-2
The Huskies were 67-44 in the 1970s. That's a 60.3% winning percentage. Schedules weren't made that far in advance, as they are now. So Alabama knew they were getting a pretty solid OOC opponent.

Alabama played Missouri in 1975 and 1978.
Missouri: 1970, 5-6; 1971, 1-10; 1972, 7-5; 1973, 8-4; 1974, 7-4; 1975, 6-5; 1976, 6-5; 1977, 4-7; 1978, 8-4; 1979, 7-5
Missouri was 59-55 in the 1970s. Far better than the 2-4 wins a year you were suggesting. This was again a solid enough OOC opponent that Alabama scheduled. Especially when you couple with the fact that Alabama also played Nebraska and USC in the same season in 1978, as well as in 1975 playing Washington, Clemson, and TCU in addition to the Tigers.

Yeah - those 1-9 and 2-8 seasons stand out but ok, you win. Bryant had an awesome history of scheduling huge inter-sectional games. Feel better?

Why does it matter how good either were when Alabama scheduled the game? Alabama scheduled the 2002-2003 OU series in the mid 90s, when they were awful. By the time we played them, they had won the national title in 2000. UW and UM were decent OOC games, when you coupled them with other good OOC games in the same season. Especially 1978, when Alabama playd #7 USC, #10 Nebraska, #11 Missouri, and Washington.

How the hell can you have the Red Sox logo and a Rangers player on your avatar? You're such a bandwagon fig.

How the frick can you be from Texas and be a Red Sox fan? When did you start rooting for them? 2003? People like you are why so many people hate Red Sox fans now. Back before everybody started jumping on their bandwagon, I respected their fanbase. They were passionate, knowledgeable about baseball and stuck with their team through thick and thin. But now unfortunately, half their fanbase is made up of bandwagon pink-hatters like you.

If you like baseball, why do you not follow Alabama baseball at all?

We were, but he scheduled many of the series played well in the 1980s, including Penn State, Notre Dame, Boston College, Ohio State, and Georgia Tech.

Don James #9 ranked UDub came into Tigerstadium 1983, right off winning at #8 Michigan..unranked LSU smashed them 40-14 like a fly..I and many others(sitting in the aisles) were there..Fire Marshalls will never do one like that ever again.

If you read my previous posts, I have explained why I don't follow college baseball many times. First of all, the quality is terrible. The quality of college baseball is between Advanced A and AA Ball. The truly elite prospects almost never college baseball. If CFB was like CBB, a player like Adrian Peterson would never have even come close to stepping foot on campus. You can't follow recruiting at all. Imagine if Julio Jones committed to Alabama, was drafted by a NFL team three months later and then has two months to decide if he wants to sign with the NFL team or stick with his commitment to Alabama. That's basically what college baseball is like. College baseball was also played with aluminum bats for many years which made it unwatchable for a baseball purist like me. I absolutely hated how offensively oriented major league baseball was for a ten year period from the mid '90s to the mid '00s and college baseball was a million times worse. A pitcher could make a phenomenal pitch and a batter could just reach out, not make particularly good contact and the ball would rocket past the first baseman down the line for a double. That doesn't take skill or talent. The bats just gave such an enormous advantage to the batter that I couldn't stand watching the sport. I'm only recently starting to get back into college baseball now.
