How can they fix the bowls?

Or are they dead? Can only imagine it will get worse with the 12 team playoff next year. The playoff will be fine and draw huge numbers in person and on tv but there’s no way people are going to continue to travel, spend money on hotels, etc. to watch second and third stringers in a glorified scrimmage. I don’t think there is any way the bowls can continue in the direction they are headed.

That’s it. It’s become a scrimmage. Bowls should be played in preparation for next year. Maybe even move them to the end of spring practice.
Only players for the following season should be involved.

Pay the players a bonus to play in them? Maybe even a performance bonus?
Just throwing that out there. Don’t shoot me.

I don't think there is a way to fix it. However, I would move the minimum number of wins to 8 and cut the number of bowls from 43 to 25. This wouldn't fix opt outs, but you would hopefully get better match ups.
The other option is within a NIL contract putting a stipulation that the player barring injury must complete the season, including post season games.

There's only one way to fix them and that is money.
Maybe if the bowl sponsors signed an nil deal with all participating players then that would entice more to play. It likely wouldn't be enough money for top NFL draft picks to take that chance though so there's not much anyone can do about it.

How many teams were significantly affected by opt outs. All I can thing of are FSU and A&M. Otherwise, it’s been a good bowl season.

The bowls should be part of the playoffs.
For instance, if Georgia/FSU had been playing in a semi-final game as part of the 12 team players, then I'm pretty sure FSU would have had fewer players opting out.

There are way too many bowls as we all know. The majority of them need to go away as they serve no purpose and most of the time there are more than enough empty seats.
The NY6 Bowls don’t even make sense going forward as you can win two in the same Playoff. I just say get rid of the NY6 altogether but still have those NY6 stadiums as the permanent sites that rotate each year in the quarters and semis.
I still think the NY6 should be involved if the bowls were to stay. The quarterfinals can rotate between the six NY6 cities without being called the actual bowl game. Once the semifinals occur, those can be the two named NY6 bowls like we have now. In the same bowl season, have the other NY6 games played on a different day, preferably a week apart.
Overall, eliminate the majority of the bowls and keep just a few in which programs that just missed out on the CFP can still, hopefully, play competitive and meaningful games.
2024 Postseason (CFP)
- First Round (campus site)
- Quarters (NY6 Site, not the Bowl)
- Semifinals (Rose and Sugar)
- CFPNCG
Non-CFP
- Fiesta, Cotton, Peach, Orange
Remove the other bowls. They serve no purpose.
Have the four non-CFP bowls played the weekend prior. The following weekend, start the CFP.

Too late now, opt-outs, portal and NIL has ruined college football.

Bowls with group of 5 teams are the only ones worth watching.

The bowl games will be the playoffs

I feel teams that aren’t top 12, are going to play more starters since their starters are less likely to be drafted
Mizzou had a solid team but even if we were playing in the Gator Bowl, I’m almost sure we’d be able to field the same roster we had for the Cotton Bowl. Our best players are either too young (Burden) or not highly regarded enough by NFL scouts (Schrader) to warrant sitting out a bowl game
Teams like FSU, Washington, and Georgia have more guys with high draft status and don’t need a bowl to prove themselves. But those talented teams will make the 12 team playoff

If watching the SEC hold their own [thanks Kentucky] or kick other conferences arses is wrong, I don't want to be right.
PS - Then there is AU.
Seriously though, in the age of NIL, transfer and hearing from a scuzzy agent, that he has a friend, who knows a player who was hurt in a bowl game and it impacted his NFL chances --- this has become a problem. Add to it, increasing the number of bowl games from 17 to 35 in twenty years. Time to reduce that back to a reasonable number in the playoff era.

The bowls are dead because nobody cares including the teams that play in them. When the best players start sitting out even less people will care. Under the new format its only gonna be worse
But cfb needed a better playoff structure to decide who's the champ. Bowl games as we knew them are collateral damage

That might work. They are spring scrimmages now.

Make it part of the NIL deal. If they opt out of the bowl games, they have to pay a steep penalty. If it ever gets to the point that the players are considered employees of the schools, put a clause in their contracts requiring them to not opt out of games (with penalties if they do, financial and or loss of eligibility).

You don’t need to fix the bowls, you just need to live in reality instead of fantasy land.
1. If “your QB” is already signed with a different team, then he isn’t “your QB” and your best remaining player is not your backup. This is not hard to understand. You just need to pull your head out of your arse.
2. Coaching, recruiting, and culture matter more than ever. If you assemble a team full of babies wearing their initials in diamonds, you may have a shot at a NC, but also don’t be surprised when they quit on you. It’s a gamble.
That being said, you can forget anything I said about Michigan. I hope Bama wins by 50. They seem to be the only team who understands this era.

Change the portal rules back to what they were pre-Covid. If you enter the portal, you sit out 1 year and only allowed to enter portal once.

Eliminate opt outs.
Move transfer portal to after bowls.
