Henry exemplifies a Heisman trophy winner. He was a really good player on a great team, so he was by default a candidate early in the season. He then took it to another level. He had huge performances in the second half of that season. He separated himself from the other contenders and won the award.
While Henry won the award by his performance down the stretch, Mark Ingram won by default. Colt McCoy & Tebow had good seasons, but they each failed to meet expectations that season. Suh wasn't going to win. The only other competition was Gerhart, and he had better performances down the stretch and many thought he deserved to win it. The vote was really close, but Ingram managed to hold on to enough votes to win. It wasn't a travesty. He did enough to earn it in a down year.

Pretty much. 2000 yards, 6.6 ypp, and 20 TDs. Great season, but the Bama hype train and being Bama's first and the season long narrative about his dad put him over the top.

I've personally never given two shits about individual awards.

Gerhart probably is and was the better RB, but that's not really what the Heisman was about.
