great stuff obreb6 and others. Thanks, I think so far it seems the top 3 are
1) race- I am surprised by this, but seems to have been a real impact, count me as one that thinks it should be way past this by now
2) admin- ask ANY power, the wrong AD, school pres etc can mean disaster for sports/fball
3) The state- 3 D1 schools and maybe the HS system in MS (I still think most southern states have same issues).

The poverty is the major factor in the shape of our educational system. More poverty=less education it's almost universal.

Several other posters in this thread have said the same thing, including other OM fans.

The number one reason is administration followed by monetary funding and then the dilution of in state talent. Race is below all of these.

instate kids from Miss have bad grades and end up in JUCO instead of SEC.
^^^This. The reason we sucked the past two years is thanks in part to:
A. Houston nutt quit the team; thus, the team quit on him.
B. The team he had left was depleted because he signed a bunch of kids who were studs but had terrible grades. Go look back at those classes, they were solid, but none of the highly recruited guys are actually still on the team.

The obvious answer is all the race issues with OM over the years, but no one wants to admit it.
This is what you said. The obvious answer is not race as I and every other OM poster have put forth. But please continue to say it's the main reason.

I agree
And this is why State has been on the rise the last 4 years in it's programs. We finally rid ourselves of the stranglehold the "Good ol boy network" had on our administration. It's done wonders to help us make progress.
If Mississippi's AD is the right hire and makes some good decisions- their programs will start making it's way back to more success

quote:Maybe you are looking at it backwards. Don't get me wrong, I think Vaught was probably in the top 5 all time coaches in the SEC. But those late 50s years, about the only decent teams in the SEC were LSU and Ole Miss. Ole Miss rarely played Auburn, Georgia or Florida during that period. Tennessee was not so hot those years. Alabama was pitiful in the 50s and didn't get back to significance until 61. Ole Miss made their hay playing the likes of Hardin Simmons, Trinity, and Chattanooga, etc.,along with their SEC schedule. MSU was pretty putrid those years too, although we had a little success in 63. We actually tied Ole Miss the last year they won the SEC.
I come here with full respect and love the rivalry we had in 50-60’s when both teams (LSU and Ole Miss) were top 10 type programs.
Ole Miss had some very good years during Vaught's tenure but I suspect it had more to do with Vaught and the SEC at the time.
But I don't disagree with a lot of the reasons others listed as to the difficulties that all of the smaller SEC schools face today in the current environment.

Getting rid of Templeton fast forwarded State twenty years while Pete Boone was busy finger popping his own a-hole.

less education = poverty
The jist of it is past leaders have done nothing about the epidemic. Nothing is being done to fix the situation because it would actually take some one to care. That is on both sides too. Stop the mentality of thinking it's ok to just to breed and actually fix the broken educational system and provide opportunities.

Agreed it's a vicious cycle. Unfortunately that hasn't come to fruition yet.

Are you speaking of the Northern Arizona game? The last time FDWL was played?
Because if so, the following statement is complete horseshite--
quote:
40% of the SS and it was loud as shite
I was at that game (vs NAU in 2009) and stayed to see how loud it was, there were maybe 60 students left. That was why I thought it was such bullshite about Jones banning FDWL after that game because there is now way anyone in the stadium could hear anything more than a muffle.
