In all seriousness,if Smart was unable to get Enos and wanted Pittman badly enough to then bring Chaney onboard, is the total hire a good hire?

In other words, Pittman is a great coach, no?

If beating Texas to get you to 7 wins feels borderline erotic, then yes.

Bert took half his Oline to Pittman's home and asked him to reconsider, of course he is a strong hire and good coach.

We only had Pittman for 3 years, so that's all I have to evaluate him on. I think it takes more than 3 years to build a dominating offensive line that's full of high quality, experienced talent.

From what I did see over his 3 years, he's a great recruiter and can field a "good" offensive line. The only team our offensive line ever dominated from beginning to end was Texas Tech, which is not that impressive. The offensive lines I've seen on the field the last 3 seasons have not struck me as being significantly better than lines I saw under Petrino or Nutt.

So in short, you're definitely getting a great recruiter and a guy who is branded as a top offensive line coach. However, I do not think he's worth having to sacrifice the OC position for. Cheney is pretty bad at the two most critical components of being an OC - QB development, and playcalling/in game adjustments.

I will take Enos over Cheney/Pittman every day.

These are two very different questions.

Pittman is a great coach. Is the total package worth it... eh. From an absolute perspective, I'd say no. From a relative perspective, he's better than Schotty.

Disagree wholeheartedly here. Petrino had one good o-line, 2010.

Pittman is a homerun hire. Best OL coach in CFB in my opinion.

Chaney is a burning train wreck of a hire.

In all seriousness, we do hate to see Pittman go, but Im laughing knowing that I will watch Georgia lose 10 yards in the red zone this year because Chaney thinks running a double reverse is a good idea.

You will land some top o-line recruits because of these hires, but it won't mean the offense is better than richt had this year

I appreciate the insight.

I'm thinking Smart's offensive philosophy involves winning the line of scrimmage.

Furthermore, I think it's interesting that he inquired about Enos and winds up with Chaney/Pittman. It's interesting.

Pitman is a great OL coach as well as OL recruiting. But if I had a choice, take Cheney back as OC and keep Pit, or keep Enos and hire a new OL coach? Keep Enos.
But Pit is a very good coach and wish him well, great hire!

It's kind of like getting married to an OT 9 but she has an OT 1 Mom that moves in with you, and has to sleep in your bedroom. Oh, and you have to change your Mother in Law's colostomy bag.

The good news is, OT 9 bro
The bad news, no sex

Who knows, given the right weapons, it might be genius

I expect Chaney will be on a short leash. I don't imagine Smart will let him pull down the program for too long. FWIW, I think it was a good decision.

Recruits love Pittman and so he's a great recruiter for the offensive line, mostly. But does Georgia really need a great recruiter to find good offensive linemen?

I'm sure he's also a great OL coach, but I can't say that I know that for certain. Bielema has always had good lines and how they perform on Saturday has a lot to do with the OC, obviously.

Chaney is allegedly well-respected in the coaching profession and does seem to know a lot about X's and O's. Putting it altogether and making it work on the field doesn't seem to be his strong suit, however. His supporters will point to Drew Brees, but just look at the rest of his record and make your own decision.

I'd say it's confusing, at best. It could work out well, but I don't think Chaney is a good fit for Georgia. Pittman is a great hire for anyone, but it's not like Georgia really needed someone who's great at recruiting offensive linemen, so I can't say that I think the total hire is good.

With all due respect, as a Georgia fan, I assure you we need help recruiting and developing offensive linemen.

If he can help with that I'm 100% onboard.

Btw, I think Chaney is the biggest reason why we had a 17 game SEC losing streak.

Pittman is great. Chaney is bad. You'll be a bit better off than with Shittenheimer but it's nothing to get excited about. I hope you hate good play calling in the redzone, because so does Chaney.

Then you'll be very happy with Pittman.

I don't think anyone would be unhappy with him.

If you mean by your question 'is hiring Chaney to get Pittman?' worth it, then..

In a nutshell... no.

You'll have a good offensive line that will still have to execute Chaney's calls and kill drives.
