At the same time? Georgia Tech really quit trying 50 years ago. Auburn and Florida missed on coaching hires but should be back with right hires. All 3 are historically strong programs. I just don’t remember all 3 being down at the same time.

The dark ages of GA football were 2 periods 1950-1963 and 1986-1996. We got our butts kicked in Era 1 by all 3, and 2 of 3 in Era#2.

Not many fanbases have 3 true rivals.

Florida has been in a similar situation, though.

2009
FSU 7-6
Georgia 8-5
Tennessee 7-6

And for good measure, their West permanent, LSU, was 9-4

Clemson’s rise from pretty good to annual national championship contender was greatly helped by the self destructive demises of SC and FSU.

Does anyone at FSU consider Clemson to be a rival? or are they simply the best competition in the ACC?

They should have kept Paul Johnson and hired a quality DC. They were a tough matchup and he won 6-8 games a year. Won the ACC

I’m sure they’re a solid number 3 for most Noles fans who have grown up with the Bowden bowl followed by a few big Jimbo-Dabo games.

The demise of Tennessee also helped Clemson.

I do think FSU and Clemson have a pretty spirited rivalry Al eight prob not as much as Clemson’s with SC & NCST or UF and Miami for FSU. The had some wars in the 80’s when Bowden and FSU were independent and Danny Ford was the Palmetto SMU.

So would you put it as the same type of game as LSU/Alabama? I follow basically no ACC football so I honestly don't know

Didn’t Georgia Tech win a national championship in 1990?

FSU i agree with. USCe not in my opinion. I think them being good for that short period of 5 or 6 years fueled Clemson's desire more than anything. Clemson's rise was happening regardless of what USCe did,, the train was already starting to roll. Even the last of the 5 straight it was easy to see Clemson was the better team (Spurrier even said as much), 5 or 6 turnovers was the difference.

Clemson gave Dabo the money to go buy the best coaches. He started with Chad Morris and then Venables after that debacle against WVA.

I would say the 4 main things that got Clemson to 2015 were:

1. Chad Morris and his recruitment of D Watson. His offense at the time smwas an easy sell to skill players.
2. Getting destroyed by WVA in the OB and getting rid of Kevin Steele and hiring Brent Venables.
3. Beating LSU in the Peach Bowl.
4. Beating OSU and Urban in the Orange Bowl, it showed them they could play at that level. I think standing toe to toe with Bama in the 2016 Championship game was validation.
Bonus of course was hiring Dabo which at the time seemed like Clemson was content on being a solid club with a chance at the ACC every few years. Like Dabo or not he sold his program and vision to coaches, recruits and boosters.

I would think Clemson's closer rivals would be Auburn and Georgia

Clemson and UGA should be played more often. It was great in the 80s. UGA has a dominant lead in the series.

Bro, it was my opinion to his statement. Saying NO without explanation would be as dumb as Ray Tanners hiring resume of men's coaches for you guys.

Not quite to that level prob more like LSU/A&M w/some bad blood before they were in the same conference. Though LSU/A&M is more of a series where one team consistently wins 7 of 10. FSU/Clemson long streaks of one team dominating then the other.

We won each of those by double digits. Including when a back up QB came in and won @Clemson.

I’m not even saying Clemson would’ve stayed where they were or wouldn’t have been national title contenders. I am saying if we had stayed at that level that we were we would’ve beaten Clemson at least some of the games during their current 7 game win streak.

Depending on the season, that would’ve been enough to knock Clemson out of the playoff(s) which in turn would’ve have helped dampen Clemson’s run as an automatic playoff making machine that’s so alluring to recruits.

Instead, we imploded with Spurrier, Muschamp, and Tanner and removed a hurdle from Clemson’s path. Add that to FSU’s self destruction and the two teams on that regularly beat up on Clemson under Dabo were now out of the way.
