I'm hearing this is going to get very ugly for bama and that Saban is likely getting the hell out of dodge.

I just read the article.
It seems the 500 shouldn't be a big deal, now the 12 Charger, ipad, custom embroidery, Air Jordans...etc, seem excessive for a dude that cant scratch up 500 bucks. 2+2=4
Really, doesn't this guy have a dorm room to sleep in? It looks like he is living out of his car...
More seriously though, it wouldn't surprise me if the backpack and sandals - shoes too probably - were all free-issue equipment to him from the FB program. The players all get free swag as part of the school's contract with whoever, in this case Nike. Sweat suits, tees, shorts, sandals and sneakers. The embroideries were most likely because the entire team gets the same stuff, and the numbers help keep them with who they belong to...

The two words that will send lots of posters here into a tizzy of rage and frustration and the rest into a faint of relief:
"Secondary violation"
Honestly, if it weren't Bama, this story would be relegated to a side-bar headline. Secondary violations are so common at every single major university in football that self-reporting them is just the equivalent of spring cleaning.

yet HaHa has a new Dodge Charger with 2 12 inch sub woofers. not saying this doesn't happen everywhere, because it does, but let's not act like they're living the life of a vagrant in college

This is my question on the situation and I might have missed if someone in the know answered it.
1 when hcd took the loan he because ineligible
2- to become eligible again, he would have to go thru the NCAA via alabama compliance department.
3- since that process has not taken place, he was ineligible in every games he's played in
So what is the penalty for playing an ineligible player? Is it to forfeit games?
4- if it has to be that "alabama knowingly played an ineligible player" to be forfeited...well a member of the Alabama coaching staff DID know, did not say anything and allowed him to play.
So who and how many people have to know?
This is not only hcd violating the rules but a member of Alabamas coaching staff.
1. He took it during the summer.
2. Supposedly thats the way it works but bama fans say because he showed a bunch of withdraw slips that was equaled to or more than what the coach gave him, that he said he gave the coach means he was automatic eligible again until Bama found out.
3. Same as 2.
4. Schools usually have to forfeit games that ineligible players play in.
Usually a staff member or AD official. As was in this case with a coach being the one giving the extra benefits.
It depends on the randomness of the NCAA and Mark Emmert. If there are any vacated games the NCAA will drag it out until the season is over so they won't really matter.

a 2012 car is not brand new in 2013, its 2 years old. i dont know hahas situation, but if he is dirt poor he probably gets a pell grant, which is like $460 + a month, more than enough to cover car payment and insurance for a 2012 challenger. If hes not poor, then whats to say his parents cant buy him a car, considering they dont have to pay tuition, room and board, etc? black guy cant afford to buy shoes or own a car. racist frick.
Bama players sure do love them some Challengers.

You rebs need to worry about your own program. Your program is being investigated by NCAA for recruiting violations.

Wrong, Davis was fired because of the academic scandal. The issues with his other coach probably helped but that had been lingering but the academic was the final nail in his coffin.
"Our academic integrity is paramount, and we must work diligently to protect it," Thorp said in a statement. "The only way to move forward and put this behind us is to make a change."

i just bought a 2008 tahoe and put down a sizable down payment. the monthly payments alone are almost $400. without a down payment, i would have been looking at around 500+ a month. but seriously, let's not try to pretend like athletes that drive nice cars are all going through ncaa compliant means to obtain them. it happens everywhere. don't try to read what i wrote like alabama is the only school where this happens. what is funny is how some, not all, bama fans are trying to justify all these things as if there's nothing abnormal about a poor kid having a nice car because he happens to be on scholarship. if he couldn't afford to pay for college, he's not going to be able to afford to pay for the car. how would he even get approved for a loan on a car? i can guarantee you there are very few college students that will be approved for a loan on a car without a co-signer. and if he was poor growing up, like others have said, where is he going to find a co-signer for a nice car?

uh, where did i say anything of the sort. and btw, just a couple posts down, someone from your own fanbase said he was dirt poor. i said a college kid that can't find $500 from a relative probably can't afford to buy all the things he has.

This is correct but I'm not sure if it's a matter of going through the proper procedures "when you find out" about a violation or right after the violation occurs. There could definitely be vacating of wins issues if it's a right after it happens rule.
quote:
3- since that process has not taken place, he was ineligible in every games he's played in
Maybe, maybe not. See response to question #2.

Playing an ineligible player results in the vacating of wins. Forfeiture of wins only happens when an ineligible player or players is played "knowingly". This happened in the Langham case and is a big no no. UA compliance clearly knew well before the 1993 season that there was an agent issue with Langham and didn't follow proper protocol. This is a much different situation even though a staffer is involved.
Bottom line: The worst that happens is that the 4 games have to be vacated and there is a minor scholly hit of 2 or 3 total schollies and "probation". That's the absolute extreme end of the penalty meter imho. The more likely penalty is the coach is fired, Dix sits for 4 or more games, and MAYBE the 4 games are vacated but that probably doesn't happen unless the NCAA is mad at us for some reason.

I haven't read everything in this thread, but this I know:
D.J. McCarthy was fired, and LSU received 1 year probation and a reduction of 2 scholarships, for McCarthy giving Akiem Hicks a ride from the Airport and making arrangements for him to spend the night at another student's apartment in the summer just before Hicks reported to LSU for Fall camp. Akiem Hicks was ruled ineligible to play for LSU that year.
So........... People that say that an Asst. Coach giving a player less than $500 is not a big deal, well, it depends on what you think "Not a big deal" is.

he never regained his eligibility. ended up playing college ball in canada. and iirc, it was due to him not being cleared academically yet, so LSU couldn't provide him with housing until he was. big difference in this and Clinton-Dix is Hicks never played a down of football for LSU
