How can you put Osborne on the list and not put Bob Devaney?

No he didn't

Not specifically him. It was our assistants.
Ellis Johnson, Shane Beamer, Brad Lawing and GA Mangus.

Ask SCRooster he'll tell ya.

Howard Schnellenberger for what he did to get kids in the Miami area to stay home and build the foundation that led to the successes of JJ and others is top 3 without a doubt imo

I suppose but Isn't it MUCH easier to keep a kid at home as opposed to going across state lines or even flying across the country to get a kid?

Once again there Isn't a better metro area in the country to recruit than Miami PLUS you have Tampa and Fort Myers within a 3 hour drive.

Let's face it Schnellenburger wasn't exactly lights out at OU where you have to go out of state if you want to win

Urban has done the best with less scandals. Plus he done it at multiple schools.

Pat Dye sent more players to the NFL during the 80s than any coach. Great early 90s teams at AU were all his players too.

Spurrier should be on here...

Spurrier hated recruiting. He never made a secret of it. More than anything, he just happened to be an HC at UF right around the time young talent was starting to boom in Florida and he couldn't take a leak in an alleyway without splashing a half-dozen talented players. Even though he got great players with minimal effort, Spurrier's mentality as a coach was all about the system rather than the players.

Well, since we're including the 1970s, how about at least some consideration for the guy who recruited these out of state players and won national championships with them?

I was thinking about that the other day. Who were the defensive players on that Alabama team.

Barry Kraus is 55. Can't remember Rich Wingo's number but he played a long time in the NFL, the other ILB next to Krauss.

But couldn't remember Marty Lyons, then I saw that picture and the name popped into my head.

Lot of good ones. To me though, just based on what they did in the NFL, that Auburn backfield with Joe Cribbs, James Brooks, and William Andrews in it at the same time has to be some kind of record.

#36 at Bama, had a nice career for the Packers. Also an out of stater, from Elkhart, IN. I'll add him. Thanks for the reminder.

If I'm not mistaken, he made the stop on 3rd down on the 1 yard line vs. Penn State. This is 4th down.

Lou Holtz should be on your list, also Mack Brown is overrated.

1. Nick Saban
2. Bobby Bowden
3. Urban Meyer
4. Pete Carroll
5. Butch Davis
6. Barry Switzer
7. Lou Holtz
8. Jimmy Johnson
9. Tom Osbourne
10. John Cooper

You mean the guy that recruited and signed all those All-Americans, 3 future NFL 1st round picks; 3 future NFL pro bowlers; a future NFL defensive rookie of the year; a college football Hall of Famer; & a pro Hall of Famer. Not counting winning SEC & National Championships in college.

And this is just a few from the 70's.

Stack Sabans best 20 and Bobbys best 20 and it's not all that close

Let's see it, I doubt Bowen's top 20 blows away Saban's top 20

The U is the best situation recruiting wise BECAUSE of Howard. He was the one who went into the city streets and pulled kids out of the ghetto in the area to play for Miami that no major schools would touch.

Butch Davis>>>>>All

Also this list is really greatest at putting together coaching staffs. As far as I know the only ones who were actually ace recruiting assistants were Meyer, Davis and Fulmer

Great list "Into The Grinder".

I forgot about Lou Holtz, should def be up there.

1. Deion Sanders
2. Walter Jones
3. Charlie Ward
4. Derrick Brooks

I can't think of a player Saban has coached on the level of the top 4

5. Marvin Jones
6. Ron Simmons
7. Peter Warrick
8. Andre Wadsworth
9. Warrick Dunn
10. Terrell Buckley
11. Chris Weinke
12. Peter Boulware
13. LeRoy Butler
14. Corey Simon
15. Anquan Bolden
16. Darnell Docket
17. Corey Sawyer
18. Reinard Wilson
19. Paul McGowan
20. William Floyd

(off the top of my head, probably left some guys out)
Someone give me Sabans top 20. I think 5-20 will be close but Bowdens top 4 is untouchable.

Agreed. Butch Davis was a master recruiter. Anyone who follows CFB should know this. Just look at his freaking Miami teams. He literally loaded up the best roster in CFB history in 2001 MIami. That was him. It had like 5 or 6 NFL hall of famers on it.

He was also an ace recruiter for Jimmy Johnson as a DL or LB coach.

Like who? Bratton,Alonzo Highsmith,Bennie Blades,Brian Blades,Stubbs,Irvin and Jerome Brown we all recruited by other P5 schools.ND,Michigan,FSU and AU all recruited the area amongst others.

Who exactly did he pull "out of the ghetto" that nobody else "would touch"

Yea I get him starting the whole Dade county pipeline thing but now you're acting like he was a wizard searching prisons and and skid row for players
