Agreed. I have found green to gold officers superior down range at the junior levels. Had a green butter bar West Point grad assume command of our platoon mid-tour and it was a disaster. Complete disaster. Weak platoon sergeant that couldnt real him in. Needless casualties ensued.

Prior enlisted are amazing or shitty in my experience. No middle ground Some of them can't figure out how to stay out of NCO business since most of them are former NCO's. That said, I've never had a good experience with a ring knocker. It's like the saying goes: "West Point is great at producing generals but terrible at producing LT's".

The worst in garrison is with PT. Hard for prior enlisted officers to step away from that.

I dont mind breaking in new LTs, its what we do as NCOs. R

The old saying "what's the difference between a PFC and a 2LT?"

One has already been promoted twice. Ring knockers are difficult to deal with. Always will be.

I was told by both the Army and the Navy that I wouldn't be accepted with my health issues. But I was mainly planning on going in the Navy with my brother. I pull for Navy in that game simply for that reason.

I couldn't care less about that game as an army vet. I rarely even watch or check the score.

If you’re referring to the academy and other commissioning sources they are as follows:

Academy: so college, and commission once complete as a 2LT

OCS: Officer Candidate School, 12 week school at Benning after Basic. Once complete 2LT

ROTC: college and some army. Ramps up as you go up in grade so MS1 is a freshman and so on. Once complete with 4 year you’re a 2LT. Other time limits apply if you’re prior service etc.

Direct Commission: typically doctors or similar type people who have the creds. Given whatever rank the Army deems fit based on experience. I’ve seen some doctors come in as 05/06.

The green to gold reference (which is what I was) is basically already being enlisted in the Army. Applying for the program, getting accepted and the Army pays your rank and benefits while you attend college and ROTC of your choosing.

Basically sums it up

Well I'm an Army vet from an Army family and I do cheer on Army in the Army/Navy game.

But I also follow Army football the rest of the season so I am an outlier in that regard.

As for Academy graduates, I only ran into a handful when I was in. All were LTs and like almost every LT I met most were pretty clueless. Of course I was pretty clueless at first myself.

I did get to know a ton of Academy graduates growing up though. My father's last two tours of duty were both with joint commands so we had neighbors from all the services. Now I grant you this was at the end of dad's career so we were living in base housing for Majors and up... not exactly fresh out of the Academy.

They were all really nice folks. The Navy guys were a bit more everything had to be just so, the Air Force guys were a bit more laid back, and the Army and Marine guys were kind of in the middle.

In the Army, USMA grads are basically the only ones who get excited about it. And, rightfully so. It is their alma mater

I rarely watch it. But, by nature, I'm a sidewalk, bandwagon fan of Army football as an ROTC grad.

My brother was retired from the Navy about 2 yrs ago (enlisted). He was more into than I was, which I think is the norm.

On levels of give a schit about the game:
1. Academy grads

2. Vets: out of a sense of reflection and nostalgia

3. Civilian population with friends/family in the service and may not completely realize they are watching Cadets.

4. Enlisted (but primarily big football fans; no real bragging rights involved. The old days of seamen (dont get excited Aggies), soldiers, and marines getting drunk in bars and bragging on/fighting over their respective services until the MPs come in with blue helmets and nightsticks have passed us by.)

5.ROTC grads: mostly uninterested for a variety of reasons, but it does make a good social event and guarantee a non-training weekend if you have an Academy grad boss.

I like it when USMA wins, but am not emotionally attached to it like UA football.

Yes.

West Point is officially the US Military Academy (USMA)

Annapolis or Navy are officially the US Naval Academy

It is like saying Bama vs UA or Ole Miss vs UM

I watch the game and cheer for Navy (served in the Marine Corps). Do I REALLY care about it though? Not really.

AF has been in a conference for decades. Navy gets to play Notre Dame annually. Army gets to keep their bowl revenue.

Like everything in College Sports, Conferences change all the time. Army use to be in CUSA.
