I had forgotten about his 1995 season: 50 HR, 50 Doubles, 126 RBI and hit .317

Lost the MVP to Mo Vaughn in a personality/popularity contest

yep, put up those numbers on a pennant winning team as well, while Mo Vaughn hit .300 with 39 HRs and 126 RBIs. Belle also had 52 doubles. At the time, he was the first player in MLB history to hit 50 doubles and 50 HRs in the same season.

From 1993-1998, Belle won 5 silver slugger, including 4 straight from 1993-1996. In 12 MLB season (really 11 as he missed almost the entire 1990 season), Belle hit 381 home runs, 1239 RBIs and had a career .295 BA. If he hadn't been forced into early retirement because of his back, I think he still would have made the HOF even with his attitude.

Albert "Joey" Belle. Probably the best baseball player that has come thru LSU. Unfortunately for him he still seems to have major issues that has plagued him his whole life. He is 51 and looks like he is 65

I am older than that player.....

I do not follow individual players very often, even when they are in college.

I mean it's not like Albert Belle is just some random player. He was one of the best players in baseball for 6+ years

That maybe true, but I do not know all the Alabama football players on the team last year or this year.... and that includes the "glamour" positions....

I just do not follow individual players very often....

I get that, but if you followed MLB baseball, you'd know who "Joey" Belle was. He was a superstar, so if you followed the sport at that time, you knew who he was. If you didn't follow MLB baseball, then I understand.

Yep and from the people who knew him growing up, Belle was extremely well liked. He was in the national honor society and the student council president in high school. He also had a scholarship offer from the USAF. Most disorders like that generally come out when people are in their 20s so it's no surprise that his switch flipped while he was in college.

Among other things, that's why I say this isn't some situation where he's always been some thug and people try to blame a mental disorder. He's a very tragic figure. Guy should have been a HOFer.

You would be correct. I know a guy who was in fact part of this.

It's a small miracle I remember since it was so long ago. If I remember correctly, he was suspended from the College World Series and not allowed to play. His talent was matched only by his temper. His teammates pretty much hated him....pretty much nobody liked the guy.

I was thinking he was always a big guy. My steroid comment came from his temper.

Sad, this is what booze will do to you. He was a miserable frick (never wanted to talk to sportswriters and they kind of hate him for it) but damn he was awesome back in the day.

No
Albert Belle was a superstar and on ESPN regularly. Most MLB fans aren't sitting on the edge of their seats waiting to see how a Joey Belle from LSU does in the big leagues.

He was already in the majors before he changed his name to Albert

He changed his name to Albert after a stint of in-patient rehab for alcoholism prior to the 1991 season.

Do you know who BJ Upton is? You know he goes by Melvin now, right? This is no different.

You know who David Ortiz is? He used to go by David Arias until right before he was called up by Minnesota.

You know who Giancarlo Stanton is right? He changed his name from Mike in 2012.

It's ok to say you didn't follow MLB baseball in the early 90s (or now if you're unaware of those other name changes).

Fair enough, but he has always been a big advocate against steroid users and them being in the HOF, which is why I doubt he was a user given his very vocal stance. His temper problems, IMO, all go back to whatever struggles he has with his mental health. He's been in rehab for alcoholism and anger management in the past, which also probably have had an effect on his anger issues.

Obviously I could be wrong, but I am almost positive he was known as Joey Belle the first 2-3 years he was in the majors and then changed his name. Most people knew him as Joey before he came out wanting to be called Albert. I really didn't think "Albert" would catch on.

Absolutely. It was unfair of me to ascribe his temper to steroids. Sometimes people just struggle with their tempers.

According to his wikipidea he hasn't played in the MLB since 2000. A 30 yr old probably wouldn't know who this is unless its an LSU fan, especially with OP calling him Joey.

a 30 year old wouldn't follow sports when he was 12-13 years old? And since when did being older than 30 become "old"?

I'm 60 years old and I never remember him being referred to as "Joey". Practically no one called him that as a pro...hence the fact that the name "Joey" doesn't even appear in the article.

This may come as a shock to you, but there are a helluva lot of knowledgeable MLB fans here who didn't give a shite about LSU baseball 30 years ago.
