Belle was Joey at LSU, a speedster CF. Re-branded himself as Albert the power hitter.

Lots of similar transformations in MLB in those days

His early MLB cards were Joey as well. I think he may even have dropped the E at the end of Bell later on too...either that or added it later. Some of this is fuzzy recall...always disliked him on general principal, and it didn’t help that he played for the Tribe.

He was very hard to like. He tried to run over some teenagers on Halloween because he thought they egged his house. Hit one of them with his truck. Amazing how we ignored roid rage back then.

Man, he could rake though

He's always been a power hitter. He hit 42 home runs in 2 years in college.

As to his name, his middle name is Jojuan, so he went by Joey for short. His first name has always been Albert. He just decided he wanted to be called by his first name instead of a nickname for his middle name when he turned pro.

Btw, I've always thought Belle was undiagnosed bi-polar. Nothing else would explain his behavior except for some sort of psychological disorder. He's always been huge and also spoken out against steroid users being in the HOF.

Belle didn't kill anybody, that we know of.

From the Washington Post"
quote:

Witness his rap sheet: In 1990, Belle was released from a winter ball team in Puerto Rico for failing to hustle. In 1991, he threw a ball into the stands at a heckler, missed, and hit a schoolteacher instead. In both 1992 and 1993, he was suspended for charging the mound. In 1994, he was suspended for seven games for using a corked bat. Last Halloween, two days after the Indians lost the World Series to the Atlanta Braves, he chased trick-or-treaters who had egged his suburban Cleveland home (Belle apparently doesn't hand out Halloween candy) into an open field in his truck, bumping one of the kids with the automobile. He is being sued by the child's family.

If not that, then something similar. I never knew he had a twin brother who handled all of his publicity.

He was the classical tragic hero: deeply flawed and genius at the same time

You would be correct. I know a guy who was in fact part of this.

I don’t even care what school they went to but Albert Belle and Frank Thomas were my favorite two players to watch.
Used to collect just their cards until some stupid kid up the road stole them all while we were away. Stole my book of those plus about 8 of those old white boxes you used to put sets in. I guess jokes on him these days cause they ain’t worth crap lol. Still sentimental. I just collect autos and rare ones now for my kids to have later in life.
Anyways got off the subject but those were some of the great times watching baseball. Seems like it was just more fun back then.

Why do we always try to give people the "psychological disorder" out when they are a crappy person? Why does it even matter if he is bipolar? There are plenty of bipolar people that don't do the things he did. We all have issues that we have to overcome it's how you handle those issues that make you a good or crappy person. If he's undiagnosed it's his own fault. I know plenty of bipolar people that know there is something wrong with them and they seek help

And this was in the mid 80's before Gorilla Ball. Imagine how many he would have hit in the Gorilla Ball era?

He went by "Joey" in college and when he got in the majors he wanted to re-brand himself with his God given name, Albert. Wanted his past troubles that he had at LSU to be a thing of the past but it never would happen for for him!

Bertman has said that Bell is at least 2 different people. One is the happiest, kindest guy who loves his mom and loves to sing. The other is always angry and surly. Baseball seemed to bring out the angry Albert

Yep and from the people who knew him growing up, Belle was extremely well liked. He was in the national honor society and the student council president in high school. He also had a scholarship offer from the USAF. Most disorders like that generally come out when people are in their 20s so it's no surprise that his switch flipped while he was in college.

Among other things, that's why I say this isn't some situation where he's always been some thug and people try to blame a mental disorder. He's a very tragic figure. Guy should have been a HOFer.

I had forgotten about his 1995 season: 50 HR, 50 Doubles, 126 RBI and hit .317
