Yeah, of course.

I don't think the punishment fits the crime in this individual case, but when you take a holistic view about how much press the story got, things change. That's the way the world works.

I agree. In Jay-Z's, "The Story of O.J." he pronounced it with "ga" instead of "ger" and his point was still made. The adjectives before with the word helped him paint the picture more than the word itself.

This is the correct answer folks. That guy was a dumbass for doing that and he has no one to blame for his dismissal but himself.
Some folks just seem destined to be Aholes, this one showed his at the wrong place, wrong time and he got burned. Or more accurately, he burned himself

It's all a Cost/Benefit or Risk/Benefit analysis. It's unfortunate, because at the end of the day, Sasser's remarks are not categorically worse than a kid who drives drunk (thus endangering people's lives) or a football player who got into a physical altercation with a female (both things that we've seen not impact someone's standing in an athletic program)... but given the optics of the situation, he's viewed as an acceptable casualty while the former are viewed as "rehabilitation projects".

I would have liked to have seen an alternate resolution, but it's not terribly surprising that this is where we ended up, nor am I that upset about it. Not ideal, but he knew he crossed a line... he gave up the ability to control the outcome.

I don't know way or the other, but most universities and colleges have to fight a stigma that has haunted them for decades. With where we are now, they don't want to lose any potential economic growth coming their way. The negative press and negative recruiting alone would be time, and monetarily, consuming alone. Ironically, the schools that would try and use this against UGA have those same type of kids on their campuses right now. There is a rumor that Nolan Smith may de-commit because of this and flip to Bama and I was like, (shifty eyes with a confused looked) "Why? Going to Bama isn't exactly escaping from the potential of racial slurs being hurled at you. If that makes you said, there are plenty of sorority girls, and other white girls in general, that would love to make you feel better about those sadz. 10 in one therapy session should do the trick."

How old are you? DMX song came out 20 years ago, so the differing meanings were around well before then.

This is possible… It’s also possible that this person is an aspiring SJW that is looking to be awarded status points for spotting the “racist“ and fighting for minorities everywhere… And just made it up. Wouldn’t be the first time that happened by a long shot. They were in a stadium with probably 50 people with an earshot… People yelling “n*****” tends to get the attention of others… I wonder if anyone else is corroborating her story.

Sometimes the need to be noticed results in harsh observation and scrutiny. Perhaps that will be the case here.

But she said it is true so it must be true... look at Kavanaugh... we no longer need corroborating evidence because, as a society, we have surpassed this need of the enlightenment period.

If actually true, then it should be used as an educating moment... we should stop this "lets destroy your life" movement we are in.

Agreed. That's the other part of this discussion that some forget. All incidents regarding potential racial connotations are not equitable. I'm much more understanding of this outcome than, say, the Papa John's flap or the sportscaster who got fired for saying "cotton picking" with regard to Russell Westbrook.

No one seems to be refuting it... 3 girls were pictured in the Dawgnation article about the outcome, all apparently having been present, so it pretty clearly happened. With that said, if you read through some of Africa Buggs remarks, you are left wondering how much she may either be embellishing the amount/frequency with which she and friends deal with this sort of behavior, or if perhaps she's actively seeking it out. I will never claim that it's impossible for someone to experience something, but her claims do seem pretty implausible given my 4 years in Athens and the experiences of my friends, both minority and not.

fricking racist dumbass always thinking about race. You can’t see what race the girl is from that two centimeter profile pic in the OP.

ETA: the girl who posted that is white, sportsfan.

Unrelated, but pretty sure we're due for a beer or bourbon or barbecue... something. You coming to Athens next year? Gonna have to start planning this offseason.

Sounds good brotha. Just pop on the UGA board once you know one way or the other. We'll get it sorted out.

UGA didn’t say it. One fan did.

If you’re going to spend your life condemning large, diverse groups you are in for the actions of single individuals you will find yourself living a very lonely existence.

Are the -a and -er separate entries in the dictionary? I truly don't know. I do know that the differing pronunciations tend to carry dichotomous connotations, of course. Never tried to look up one independent of the other, though.

good question....

upon further investigation, the dictionary just says that one is a respelling of the other. wikipedia says that there is not a consensus either way. i don't think it could be more obvious that they are, personally.

we only use words because they have meaning. both pronunciations have different meanings to most people, and you can easily discern what the speaker means by the last syllable, granted that the speaker does not naturally drop the 'r' from the ends of words in normal speech.
