Too close to the Olympics.
He needs the best money training can buy
Not getting that at college. Could end up back at school but most likely won't compete much longer as an amateur

How about Al Oarter winning 5 Olympic discus... Do you have no appreciation of what it took for Edwin Moses or Carl Lewis to do what they did?
Track and field is the most compelling sport this side of football. Even a youth parish meet is great theatre. Just because T&F is severely degraded in the US (my 1962 all-white high school team in Gainesville Fla would be competitive for State prep honors in LA today)no reason to snort just because you don’t understand what it takes.

They wouldn't even be competitive in the 352 area district level. They'd get run out of the stadium doing high jump alone, since the fosbury flop wasn't around for another 6 years.
And for laughs, here's a LINK to florida state's results from 1961-62 college season. Would get wrecked by hs kids today.
