I believe one day when some of us are dead, expenses and regressing fan interest will push universities back into regional conferences. Until then, it’s likely to get worse. Josh Pate has been hinting for a few weeks about potential ACC departures. No one you add at this point is going to bring value outside of maybe Notre Dame. Would the SEC sit at 16 or make a move? Who makes sense?

Clemson or FSU wouldn't?

I could see the SEC looking at UNC, FSU, and Clemson if they want in

It seems the flood gates are opened and there will likely be at least one more round of adjustments before the NCAA existence itself comes crumbling down due to realignment and the NIL world we now live in.

It plays out 1 of 2 ways, imo:

1. The SEC and Big 10 will pick at the top dogs in the ACC. Teams like FSU, Clemson, North Carolina, maybe a Virginia team etc join SEC/Big-10. The remainder of Big 12, Pac 12 (or is it Pac 2 now?), and the ACC may try to do some merger to have a fighting chance against the SEC and Big 10 super conferences.

2. The ACC finds a way to stabilize and brings in the relevant remaining names from the BIg 12 and Pac 2. Unlikely but I don't see how the ACC and Big 12 competes in their current state for the foreseeable future.

My predictions / 2 cents.

Depends if the Big 12 and the SEC both go to 24 teams..

Add 2
UNC would be the greatest value, but they will also look at the Big 10.. After that probable Virginia.

Add 4
Probable include FSU and Clemson
[b]

To get to 24, you will need Kansas, West Virginia, Arizona, and Miami.

I had a debate with a Notre Dame fan about 10 years ago and he claimed that inevitably the SEC and all conferences would fall apart. That it was the natural way things went. This was when expansions were first happening around 2012.

I argued that he was crazy. The SEC has been around for near a century, and the schools and leadership aren't dumb enough to make those mistakes.

While technically thus far I have been correct, if I was to enter the debate again, I likely would not make the same arguments.

I do think what's going on has very little to do with the conferences and is more about certain entities trying to reshape college football itself. But there is no doubt the SEC leadership is now shite and is happily going along with.

As far as Notre Dame itself goes, after watching the Big10 court them for the better part of the past 50 years, I would laugh my arse off if they still did not end up in the Big10.

But I don't see how they really fit in with the SEC, nor do I actually want them. It's worse than adding Texas.

Not necessarily. The SEC has been trying to monetize a 9th SEC game with push back from ESPN. You wouldn’t be able to support Clemson and Florida State as full members under the current structure. You’d have to go to 9 and have someone pay a premium for it. ESPN is also not going to lose Duke/UNC. Duke/UNC basketball is one of the cogs who built the engine of ESPN. I wouldn’t be surprised if the SEC targeted the basketball tournament all together in the next round. UNC/Kansas/Duke/Virginia.

when most of us are dead the stadium's will likely be empty as kids today don't have time to attend live sporting events due to their attention spans

I would go to 24

Notre Dame
Okie St
Florida St
Clemson
Duke
North Carolina
Virginia Tech
Virginia

Then we set up 4 divisions of 6.

What's the fricking point?

Just to dilute the SEC brand even more than it already has been?

If everyone is SEC, then nobody is really SEC.

I see it working out nicely. You’re basically trimming out schools that have been left behind in college footballs half amateur half minor league system. I think both the big and sec get much bigger like almost doubling in size but it won’t be a conference it’ll be a new division. You’ll have pockets of quality football that evoke old sec pac big and acc rivals. Meanwhile schools like wake forest Oregon st Syracuse Cincy and Memphis can go back to playing actual college football with a budget that makes sense for a school that size.

I'm against expansion (previous and future) but that is the way it's heading and If for some reason the ACC turns into the PACless-12 then I could see the SEC going after FSU, Clemson, and North Carolina before the Big 10 goes after them (and possibly Virginia and NC State).
