Really good news. He has cut the extra weight as well. Hopefully he works out as well as Jefferson did for us. Kid was top ten overall out of high school so you know he has freakish talent. If we can get his head right, he is gonna be dangerous.

What does "former 5 star" entail exactly? Was he re-rated to 3* or something?

Means he was the best in the country until bad coaching lowered his rating, but has the potential to be the best receiver in his class. His raw talent is absurd. Being top ten overall as a receiver, means you are a freak of nature.
Now add in we develop receivers very well, seems like a good combo.

I've never heard of a story of a 5-star being mismanaged on a roster.
I mean, Justin Fields probably just got beat out by Fromm, sigh. :(

As he should have been.
Sucks for us, but the NCAA at least made the right call.

You honestly believe that Shorter was rerated because of coaching at Penn State?
No chance that it could have been anything else?

I think re-rating is an idiotic way 247 drums up traffic to get people to argue.
We're constantly told that 5-star talent is the only thing that matters (ironically from Georgia fans) and at the end of the day recruiting rankings are really accurate.
It's very likely that some kids just don't gel with certain staffs. He was an underclassmen at PSU, to change his rating when he only has 15 receptions in his career is pretty dumb.
Jeff Driskel (for instance) was terrible at Florida and went to have a 4,000+ yard season when he transferred. This re-rating garbage is all nonsense.

First, no one says that on an individual basis. It is like a credit score. A great score doesnt mean that you cant screw up. But the law of large numbers favors your ability to repay debt.

Have you seen his high school highlights? There weren't a lot of college prospects on the field with him. More information leads to a more informed rating.

Guys are rated up.
Guys are rated down.
For what it is worth, it appears that most players are rated closer to the mean for their classification (P5 talent).
I get a kick out of Florida fans pretending that a high school kid got worse because of P5 coaching when his prior competition was a bunch of 5 second 40 yard dash DBs. You think it was the coaching that made him worse and not his ability to improve route running, hands, and control his weight?

I literally saw it from Jeff Driskel.
Stud QB came to Florida, Muschamp couldn't find a guy to develop him -- he went on to have a 4,000 yard season at another school.
Coaching mistakes happen, Fromm wasn't better than Fields.

You cannot re-rate until the player is actually on the field at another school in my opinion. Again, using the Jeff Driskel example, if you took his Florida statistics they would have re-rated him as what, a 2-star? He had 4-years, 29 games.
23 passing TDs, 20 interceptions.
AY/A 4.725 (this is terrible).
3,411 yards over four years. 117 yards a game.
He transfers?
27 touchdowns, eclipsing 29 games in 13.
AY/A 9.4
4,000+ passing yards. 307 yards a game.
You cannot know a player until they are with another staff because you have no idea what the dynamic was behind the scenes.

Driskel wasnt re-rated down.
Kinda defeats your point.

I think we can leave off the hyperbole, lest you want to sound like a Tennessee fan. Nobody cares what he did in high school in 2017.
Personally I think it is bullshite that anyone receives a waiver unless hardship can be demonstrated. Although happy to be on the receiving end of this one.

That actually defeats your point.
His re-rating was clearly misplaced since he went on to do very well.
'By 2014 Mary Driskel wouldn't attend a Florida game without headphones. Whether her son was playing or riding the bench, she didn't want to hear it: the complaining, the disparaging, the rejoicing when he was pushed aside. And so, from the opening kickoff to the final knee, Mary let music drown out the game her son had sat at the top of four years before...
"I contemplated hanging them up there," he admits, but after having conversations with coaches he trusted at Florida, other mentors and family members, he decided to stick with football for at least another season rather than go immediately into the business world. "The continuing message, always, was [that] you are a person who plays football," Driskel's mother says. "Football doesn't define you. If you love the game, keep at it, keep doing it, and decide when you're done. Don't let someone else."
Still, in the back of his mind, Holtz reminds himself: Be gentle. Understand. When Driskel arrived at Louisiana Tech, he needed to be taught, not inundated. "We don't need to jump, yell, scream, holler," Holtz says. Petersen, too, worried about inheriting a player who was beaten down mentally. He can't figure out what Florida did to Driskel, he says, and for a moment, the coordinator's voice trails off. He looks perplexed, because he has been analyzing this game for 25 years and can't, for the life of him, figure out what happened to Driskel—or how it didn't drive him mad. Maybe it did, Petersen says. "Maybe he hides it well."
Jeff Driskel currently backs up Drew Lock at Denver. You're just wrong. Re-rating should only apply after the player transfers and plays.

Out of curiosity....what do you mean by "get his head right"? Was there a problem? Or do you mean he just doesn't have much time to get plays etc before the season starts?

Solid point. This WR may end up even better than his HS rating. Doubt it but it's possible. Not sure why Georgia fans want to shite on this kid.

Wait. Justin Fields rating got lowered? He went to a 3*? When did that happen?
