After all the shite Big Game Bob talked on the SEC time and again, if Oklahomo really does approach the SEC I think any sort of serious discussion should be contingent on OU canning that prick.

Fire Stoops and then we will talk.

Explain me how the TV markets work and why unique ones are so important. Like if I propose FSU in the SEC, people will say "erhmagerd that's not a new market we need North Carolina." Ok, but there are millions of people in Florida who aren't watching the SEC who would be, more so than North Carolina. New viewers are new viewers. Why does it matter what state they're in?

The SEC network makes more per subscriber in SEC areas/states than it does in other locations around the country. This isnt about the national TV contract, its about what the tier 3 SEC network can make.

Its actually a pretty simple concept that many here cant wrap their heads around for some reason.

When you have overlapping markets/states you are shooting yourself in the foot because the SEC network is going to be there regardless if its one or two teams. When you bring in Texas to go along with Texas A&M or Florida State to go with Florida or Clemson to go with South Carolina you are bringing in no growth in tier 3 media revenue while splitting the pie another way.

Having a sparse population grouping while having multiple teams in Tennessee,Mississippi and Alabama hurt the tier 3 revenue of the SEC. Thats why they moved to expand outside the footprint to bring in two programs in virgin areas for the SEC to grow the pie for everyone.

Its really the basis of all expansion in college athletics at this point in maximizing the tier 3 revenue/conference netwroks.

You didn't really explain. Maybe telling me what tier 3 is will help.

it's there but they're not watching/subscribing FSU fans in Florida aren't watching SECN the same way Virginia Tech fans in Virginia aren't watching.

Why don't all those new viewers and subscribers count? How is it not growth?

eta: i reread and it seems like you're saying it's just about having SECN subscription as part of cable deals, which FSU/Clemson/etc fans already have because they are in SEC states

Games and events that the tier II and Tier I contracts do not cover. EX: Everything except the CBS/ESPN Picked games in any given week. Softball,Baseball, gymnastics, BB games that dont fall under tier I or II...the list goes on.

It doesnt matter. The cable providers in said states have already worked deals with the SEC Network provider to carry said network at a higher level on a higher tiered package for that area compared to areas without SEC teams.

WHo were already paying for the SEC network through their cable providers because they live in areas/states with an SEC team. So...no growth in revenue.

Its already been explained.

genro, its a little complicated. You're a smart guy, just google it.

TV contracts are predicated on potential viewers, not actual eyeballs. When a market is covered, it no longer adds value to the network because advertising dollars and subscriptions do not increase.

Oklahoma, The Semen Holes, Climpsom, and the Nutless Bovines will not improve the SEC's TV network dollars, but will be additional mouths to feed. $400 Mill divided by 15 is better than divided by 18.

Seems crazy to me that cable package deals based on subscribers who may or may not actually be watching that channel are more profitable than the revenue from actual eyeballs and advertisement-ratings deal

Like Lifetime doesn't give a frick that i literally never watch that channel, they made more money just from the fact that it's in my cable package.

Its pretty bizarre. We will see how long it lasts. More and more folks are cutting the cord and wanting ala carte type channel choice.

It just boils down to a small handful of conglomerates that push their obscure products/channels onto cable/satellite/TV providers.

Disney tells COX that if you want ESPN you need to take these other 12 channels that we also produce or you get none. Its the same for the other major players as well.

Also it seems a la carte programming if it ever really became a thing would make this a moot issue, fsu fans would opt of SECN and suddenly become just as valuable as VTech fans. So there is hope one day
