You're are getting you areas mixed up then. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the neighborhoods south of Bryant Dr and west of BDS. There are a couple of outdated apartments just west of the stadium but the vast majority of the area is made up of nicer updated older homes dotted with several new condos and loft developments mixed in. In fact, the whole area bordered by Bryant Dr on the north, Hackberry Dr on the east, Queen City Blvd on the west, and the railroad tracks on the south might be the best neighborhood near campus. 13th street was an awesome place to live in school with all the houses with large porches and all the keg parties. Lots and lots of houses full of sorority girls living in them.

You're thinking of the area well south of there south of 15th street. The area south of there where the tornado went through was the closest "bad" area to the stadium and that's a good 2 miles south of the stadium. Claiming this area is "a couple of blocks" from the stadium or campus is like saying the rougher parts of Opelika are a couple of blocks from Jordan Hare.

Edit: I didn't say those nicer areas were near campus but they do make up a very large section of Tuscaloosa that is only a short 10 minute drive from campus and is an area casual visitors don't even know exists.

If that is the best area, then I have over estimated the city. The part I am talking about is the area near Central High School to the Stadium. Looks very unsafe and rundown.

You must be thinking about the other side of 10th Ave from CHS, but even that area is getting better. That's still a good walk away from the stadium.

Made the trip for the A&M game last year. A few observations:

1. Perhaps it was the A&M-Bama love affair, but the fans after the game were nice, almost creepily nice. You've beaten them, and are trying to make a stealthy retreat when all the Bammers come up to you, not to berate you or throw piss bombs, but to say congratulations. Not what we were used to from visits to places like Austin and Lubbock.

2. The stadium is nice, but it's not all up to date. I sat in NN, on about the same row where you are sitting, and just getting into the stadium and to my seat was an ordeal as there was a huge backup from folks trying to get into the stadium. I would get there early. Concessions were minimal on that level. Don't recall the pissers, so I'd say they were OK.

3. The place can get loud, but it can be pretty quiet at times. The worst thing was when they would play this video of the strength coach screaming at the fans to make noise. Sitting right in front of the suites, which probably caused the PA to be louder than in other parts of the stadium (sound bouncing off the concrete rather than being absorbed by fans), this was excruciating.

4. Speaking of acoustics, they suck. Sitting in the NE corner, I could barely hear the Bamma band in the SE corner. I chalk that up to the stadium architecture--one of the quirks of having a symmetrical bowl, I suppose.

5. For being the home field of Bama football, it really doesn't have a historic feel at all, which is understandable since all the big games from the Bear Bryan era were played in Birmingham.

6. Go check out the Strip, or tailgating, or both.

7. Traffic after the game, heading back to Birmingham, was nightmare, but with 100,000 fans in a small town, that is to be expected.

Overall, I found it to be an excellent experience, but my view might be colored by the result on the field.

You'll see that Tuscaloosa is a billion times more fun than Oxfart; far more women than in Oxfart; the quad is greater than the grove; Bryant-Denny is superior to Black Bear Stadium; and Alabama's Walk of Champions is better than Ole Miss' Walk of Champions.

And you'll enjoy the fresh smell of fat man fart in the concession areas.

There are dozens of neighborhoods nicer than that area so I'm not saying it's a nice "new" area. The neighborhood I described has 50 and 60 year old houses so I'm not sure what you are expecting from that area. I never claimed it was Mountain Brook but it is FAR away from being a "hellhole" unless you consider living in a safe neighborhood with refurbished older houses surrounded by co-eds a "hellhole".

Honestly, all bias aside, I went to Tuscaloosa my freshman year for the LSU v Bama game and I enjoyed it so much I went back my junior year. The campus is surprisingly well kept and very cool and Southern looking. Only one redneck dumbass was acting a fool after the game and everyone else was welcoming. The stadium is a great atmosphere and definitely something every SEC fan should experience at some point.

How far is the railroad tracks from the Stadium ?

There's a railroad track right next to Auburn's campus (within walking distance from their so called "downtown area"). We parked near it, just down from that crummy Checkers and gas station at the 2011 IB game and kept wondering how many windows would be shattered when we returned to it. So, um.... what's your point here, Chief?

Dude, Auburn is connected to Opelika and has an entire road reserved for mobile homes. I mean, for the sake of every virgin on the planet, you pass the big new Auburn Technology Park lot on I85 and right beside it sits a ghettofied trailer park.

BP,

I appreciate your thoughts on Auburn campus area but that second quote is my response to Iron about the area just south and west of BDS.

What do you expect? The few times I've been to a game at Jordan Hare the folks were oh so friendly let me tell you.

As for an Ole Miss fan, expect nothing but friendliness and pity. I'd be shocked if you don't come away with a positive vibe about the experience.

That being said the folks who've said it is quiet are pretty much spot on. It should be a bit louder being a night game and I would expect it to get loud if it's a close game or on 3rd downs. But you're in good seats which generally means older folks and they're not ones to be loud. I've bitched about this for years. I've only been to a few games in BD that clearly stand out as being loud as piss the whole time. Most of the SEC is much louder.

Depending on what time you get there you should check out the quad and even venture into a few of the frats across the street from the north endzone. Most are pretty cool as far as letting people just walk through and there's puh-lenty of eye candy. Also some have cash bars set up on the lawns.

This contradicts almost everything that I've read on this forum after someone visits AU for a game.

I know.... just wanted to share that piece of info with you.

Not to completely slaughter the town as Auburn does have several REALLY nice areas as well. Their campus alone is one of the most beautiful campuses in America, IMHO. But to the tards acting like the entire town is a country club, you're all very sadly mistaken.

Oh, there are some poor areas around for sure. North Donahue is definitely not where you take newcomers.

Do you not notice a trend here? Non Alabama visitors to Jordan Hare rave about being treated well. Non Auburn visitors to BDS universally praise the hospitality they're shown. Fans from both schools bitch about poor treatment when they go to the other team's stadium. In short, neither school should delude themselves into thinking they behave better towards the other.

I am not talking about UAs Campus, I am talking about a area close to the campus. I was surprised by how that area was rundown. With the growth of enrollment, I figured the students would push that element of town further out. I would not want my child walking that area from 15th Street to Bryant Dr and West at night.

Expect to see "Zero Meth" ads in the stadium, not kidding. I guess this explains so many toothless fans. All in all I've had a great time in BDS on all my trips. I have family that went to school there so they always show me around TTown. If you win the fans are great afterwards, if you lose expect some shite talking. Try to hit up Archibalds for some BBQ.

Your child couldn't be safer in that area. The vast majority of people that live there are students.
