You're right, and that's the problem with the majority of the Auburn fans around here. They're so butt-hurt over not being able to compete with Alabama on a consistent basis, it's turned them bitter and mean.

This thread is unfortunate. Gus has done amazing things at Auburn. When he's got recruits that fit his scheme his teams are offensive nightmares. Last years wins over Georgia and Alabama are enough to guarantee his job for another 3 years. Gus isn't just competing with the best he's beating them often enough to snag a Natty. Gus is always one recruiting class from being the Alpha Dog in the SEC. When he gets it right nobody wants to play him.

Do Auburn boosters have the financial power to buy out his contract? Yes, BUT, do they have the power to do that AND keep financing Auburn's endowment, its scholarships to attract top students, and its thirst for new facilities? Auburn not only has to compete with Alabama football, it also must compete with UA's new facilities, its even more generous scholarships, and its already slightly larger endowment. I actually hurt for Auburn. This is a really tough situation and is indicative of the bread and circus nation we have become. In what rational world does a school spend so much money on a mediocre coach when its main mission is supposed to be educating students? At least UA can rationally claim that Saban has the midas touch (fastest growing state flagship since he arrived, sparkling new academic facilities on campus) and is truly superior at what he does.

But I wonder. Is $38 million really worth a regular cold reception from the fanbase at the Tiger Walks each homegame? Seriously, wouldn't that really get to him at some point?

Hell, AU needs a major stadium renovation and should’ve broke ground when they were riding high after the ‘10 NC. Instead they paid another coaching staff to not coach at AU. Now they’re on the hook from buyouts triple the Chizik staff, only delays those facility upgrades even longer.

Actually the focus is on a football only facility...which by all reports is ahead of schedule in fund raising.

Auburn is not a bigger is better institution. Bama keep your out of state tuition lower and be the safety net school. That’s just fine.

Still raising funds? So are the feasibility studies done? Are they still going back to the drawing board? Have they received favorable votes from the fan base from their questionnaires?

Heck yeah $38 million is worth any cold reception. After all, if he wins a few games, it will fade. There are boosters that can pay the buyout personally, but its irresponsible and ridiculous in any event.

Gus has done a lot of good things at Auburn. It hasn't all been bad by any means. Its just that everything is always what are you doing right now....Its the world we live in unfortunately.

It's called a trend. He will lose this team if he hasn't already and that is unacceptable.

Excellent observations so far. So, thanks to everyone who has responded. I hate being in this situation and can understand how you guys would be too in relation to your own particular programs. I actually value, instead of being offended by, outside criticism.

It is our row to hoe, and only the future can decide I suppose.

Thank you for your honesty.

He's an 8-5 coach who underachieves some years and overachieves other years.

That is the problem.

Correcting past contract decisions and making better decisions in the future seems to be an issue that Auburn needs to correct in the future.

Gus is already set. I hope he does well for the sake of our program, but if not, then our planning on future hiring decisions need an obvious overhaul.

No more instantaneous decisions that can magically predict the future.

A respectable base salary with "rewards" of actually winning games would not be a bad way to go.

He got that contract because he beat UGA and Bama last year and Arkansas was knocking at his door. The pigs would have loved to have Gus. I don't think you had a choice but to offer him a big deal like you did but this is the downside. His teams have shown to be very inconsistent. You just have to live with it.

There got to be another coach better than Gus that is available and will not cost a lot too!

There’s no way they actually pay the buyout though right?

Auburn no, it will have to be at least 50% from boosters.
