anyone answering auburn needs to list all of the college towns they've ever visited so we know if they are dumb, not well traveled, or both.
auburn is perfectly fine and enjoyable, im not trying to overexaggerate, but come on

Baton Rouge was the nicest by far.

I think you first have to define what a college town is.
Places like Baton Rouge, Knoxville, Austin, Atlanta, New Orleans, CoSC, and Nashville may have a current or former SEC school, but they aren't college towns. Some are the largest or second largest cities in their state and others are the state capital. They would be the cities they are if the university that was located there happened to be elsewhere.
Auburn, Oxford, Starkville, and to a lesser extent Tuscaloosa and Athens wouldn't be the towns/cities they are without the university. What would that city be without the university?
Just using an example: Gainesville's #1 and #2 employers are UF and the UF system hospital, so without the university, I'd say it would be indistinguishable from any other city of its size in Florida with similar demographics.
So define the criteria of a "college town" as opposed to a city that happens to have a major college in it, then a good discussion can be had.

Any food recommendations in Austin?
Austin has great $65 barbecue plates with the sides coming in little plastic condiment cups. You'll also be surrounded in the restaurant by self-congratulatory hipsters, and it's always a privelege to be in the presence of people who are saving the world and making the world a better place to live.

Knoxville isn’t that large.

The question was favorite, not nicest. I could say Nashville is the best road trip just because there's so much to do around the campus, but that's not exactly the same question.

It isn't exactly a small, quaint college town.

There's only 400k in the metro area of Knoxville.

Exactly this. I have no clue why people slobber all over Auburn everytime this subject comes up. I find the town boring and stale. It is clean but come on. It seems like some of you guys have never left the South or not far away from the deep south. Charlottesville, Ann Arbor, Boulder, Ft. Collins are all great places to visit.

I'll say that the weirdest college town I've ever visited is Lubbock. It's in the middle of nowhere.

I’ve heard that town is awful and their fans are awful which is unexpected

Ain't nothing wrong with Oxford.

Athens, but I do want to get up to Ann Arbor. I’ve heard that’s a great college town. That or Madison.

Too many to list.
Missoula, MT, Eugene, OR, Athens, OH and Princeton, NJ were four that I really enjoyed outside the South.
SEC - Fayetteville
