I walked on for three seasons in the early 2000s (Fran’s 2 seasons and Shula’s first). Lots of talent on those teams. Multiple guys were longtime NFL starters. Coaching changes and a lack of depth held those teams back some, but that 2002 team could play with anyone.
We went 1-2 against UT. The win was an awesome blowout in Neyland where y’all had to turn off the stadium lights to get the fans to leave. The last loss was the 5 OT game that demonstrated, unfortunately, how much Shula was in over his head.
Those were fun times. The struggles of the late 90s and early 2000s have made the Saban era that much sweeter.
