Trindon Holliday is the fastest I've seen.

If we're talking about football, I'm assuming the fastest was some track star who wasn't actually a great football player. Nothing to base that on, though.
If it's not limited to football, then Justin Gaitlin ran track at UT.

The answer is Bo Jackson. Guy ran a 4.12. Reread that if you must.
The think that makes Bo's speed so incredible was the fact he was like 230. He wasn't some 170 pound football player.

I'd go with Bo Jackson
Funny story about Willie Gault: When he ran back the kickoff against LSU in 1982 he turned and said something to the LSU sideline on the way by. Coach Stovall was asked what he said, and Stoval said "Beep Beep"

If we are just going by pure speed then it is either Xavier Carter or Trindon Holliday.

The fastest player that I've seen using a simple eyeball test is Percy Harvin.
I have no idea what he ran the 40, and I don't consider it to be relevant. Whenever that guy touched the football, my heart would skip a beat out of a feeling of dread that he wasn't going to be caught by anybody on my team.
I've seen that from two other guys at the college level, but neither were in the SEC. Rocket Ismail and Mike Vick.
Randy Moss too.

Justin Gatlin, who ran 9.85 s for a gold medal at the 2004 Olympic 100 metres, before being banned from the sport for abuse of performance drugs, has a verified 40-yard dash best of 4.42. This reflects the discrepancy in a runner's calculated time when using different timing methods.
This is true. Olympic sprinters go on the gun. At the combine, the clock starts when they start. This amounts to roughly .15 seconds. That sounds about right, as I doubt that Gatlin -- or even Usain Bolt -- would be faster than Chris Johnson was in the 40 yd dash. Olympic sprinters are faster because they keep accelerating, not because they are faster out of the block.
And then there is one more level to this, which is the hand-timed 40s. Here is what you do with them....you laugh at them.
For the handful of people on here who posted about Bo Jackson's 4.12 40...and were being entirely serious. Please don't reproduce. Seriously.
