This occurred on broadcast TV, yet it was auto flagged as sensitive content. I haven't had a Twitter account for well over five years, so to re-create the experience, open the link in a private window.

I mean, WTF. The dude didn't even mention Jesus, just G-d.
WTF.

Doesn’t the Bible say something about people who pray in public / to be seen?

That doesn't mean you can never pray publically. God in the flesh, Jesus Christ, prayed in front of others in the Bible. Jesus was specifically talking about those who pray in public that desire to be seen and heard. That's obviously not the case here. The man put his job on the line to pray, and it was amazing. We need more of it.

No it speaks about a man praying to the effect of “thank you Lord for not making me a heathen like those around him” there nothing wrong with praying in public at all.

Yes. But the Bible says a whole lot. Here are some excerpts about praying in public.

quote:

Matthew 6:6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Matthew 6:1-34 “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. ...

Matthew “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

Matthew 6:7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.

But then, it says this about being ashamed to show your faith to others.

quote:

Mark 8:38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

Luke 9:26 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

Romans For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

I interpret all of that to mean “don’t try to use your faith as a currency, or use insincere prayer to further your own goals.” But also do not be ashamed to pray or show faith in front of others if you are truly convicted and believe. Just my take on it.

Usually reading one verse of scripture as the end all, be all and applying it to all situations without considering the whole Bible is unwise.

If Dan Orlovsky prayed because he truly felt convicted and thought it would help the situation, that is great. If he did it as a publicity stunt to get reactions bad on him. But I doubt that he did that, as he knew he would catch tremendous backlash from his employer. I prefer to believe it was sincere. But I am naive and still think there is a little good in most people.
